How to sync photos from iPhone to Windows faster and more conveniently than iCloud.
iCloud Photos is Apple's preferred photo synchronization service for iPhone users. But if you use a Windows computer, use Microsoft's OneDrive instead of iCloud to back up and synchronize your photos.

With OneDrive, you can easily save photos to the cloud and sync them across all your devices—Windows PCs, iPhones, and iPads. Additionally, editing photos directly on Windows and syncing changes using iTunes or the Apple Devices app is incredibly easy. Like Apple, Microsoft offers 5GB of free storage. If you need more, you'll have to pay for a Microsoft 365 subscription .
Before syncing, take some time to review your photos on your iPhone and delete any unwanted files. This will remove unwanted photos and free up space on your phone and in OneDrive.
How to sync photos from iPhone to Windows via OneDrive
To begin, you need to install OneDrive on your iPhone. Open the app and sign in with your Microsoft account. Tap the Gallery icon at the top. You may see a message indicating that Camera Backup is off. If so, tap Turn On . If not, tap your account profile icon and select On under Camera Backup is off.
Alternatively, you can go to Settings > Camera Backup and then turn on Camera Backup. You will receive a notification from OneDrive requesting full access to your photo library. At the bottom, tap Allow Full Access .
During the backup process, a blue circle will appear around your account profile icon. Tap the circle to see how many files are left and how much space has been used on OneDrive. When the process is complete, a status will indicate that the backup is finished.
On your Windows computer, make sure OneDrive is set up and syncing. In Windows, right-click the OneDrive icon in the system tray and select Settings. On the Sync and backup screen , click Manage backup > turn on Pictures , then click Save Changes .
To view your synced photos, click the OneDrive icon in the system tray and select Open folder. Open the Photos folder in the OneDrive folder tree and select Camera Roll. Your OneDrive photos are sorted by date, starting with the year and then the month. You can choose to view photos by specific year and month.
By default, OneDrive files in Windows are only stored in the cloud and downloaded to your computer when you open them. If you want to have all your photos on your computer so you can access them anytime, even offline, you need to open File Explorer , right-click on the Camera Roll folder , and select Always keep on this device . All your photos will then be downloaded to your computer.
However, Apple's "closed garden" approach creates a major limitation: you won't be able to sync changes to photos across devices if you delete, edit, or rename them.
