The safest way to restart a MacBook is to save your work and choose Apple menu > Restart. A normal restart lets apps and macOS close files cleanly. Force a shutdown only when the Mac is completely unresponsive because unsaved work can be lost.
Restart from the Apple menu
- Save open documents and wait for file copies, backups, or updates to finish.
- Select the Apple menu in the upper-left corner.
- Choose Restart.
- Clear Reopen windows when logging back in if you are troubleshooting and do not want the same apps to relaunch.
- Select Restart to confirm.
Restart with the keyboard
Press Control + Command + power button (or Touch ID button on supported keyboards) to request an immediate restart. This shortcut may not offer a save prompt, so use the Apple menu when the pointer still works. On some external keyboards the key layout differs.
Restart from Terminal
Advanced users can open Terminal and run:
sudo shutdown -r nowEnter the administrator password when prompted; Terminal does not display password characters. This command restarts immediately, so save work first. There is little reason to use it for an ordinary restart.
Force a frozen MacBook to shut down
- Wait briefly to make sure the Mac is not installing an update or completing a storage operation.
- Try Command + Option + Esc and force-quit only the unresponsive app.
- If the entire Mac remains frozen, press and hold the power or Touch ID button for up to about 10 seconds until it turns off.
- Wait several seconds, then press the power button once to start it.
Do not repeatedly force power off, and do not wait for the battery to drain. Either approach can interrupt writes and increase the chance of file or system damage.
If the Mac stalls during restart
Disconnect nonessential USB devices, hubs, and external displays, then try starting again. If it reaches the login window, install pending stable macOS and app updates, check available storage, and review login items under System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions.
If it repeatedly stops at the Apple logo or progress bar, use Safe Mode on a Mac to test whether startup software is involved. Apple silicon and Intel Macs use different Safe Mode steps.
If the screen stays black
- Connect the correct power adapter and allow time to charge.
- Increase display brightness and disconnect external displays.
- Listen for startup sounds or fans and check whether an external monitor shows an image.
- Follow this MacBook black-screen troubleshooting guide.
Repeated blank starts, shutdowns, unusual heat, battery swelling, or liquid damage require qualified service rather than more forced restarts.
Does restarting erase files?
A normal restart does not erase saved files. It closes processes, clears temporary state in memory, and starts a fresh macOS session. Unsaved edits can be lost if an app cannot quit or the Mac is forced off. Keep a current backup; restarting is troubleshooting, not a substitute for backup.
How often should you restart?
There is no required weekly schedule. Restart when an update requests it, an app or service is misbehaving, performance degrades unexpectedly, or a support step calls for it. Sleep is fine for routine pauses, while Shut Down is useful before storage, travel, repair, or a long period without use.
