When a laptop USB port stops working, first isolate the failed part: the accessory, cable, port, hub, power supply, driver, or Windows configuration. Do not format or replace a storage device merely because one port does not detect it.
1. Test the device and port separately
- Safely eject the USB device if it still appears in Windows.
- Connect it directly to another port without a hub or adapter.
- Test a known-good low-power device, such as a mouse, in the suspect port.
- Test the original device and cable on another computer where practical.
If every accessory fails in one port, the port is likely the problem. If one accessory fails everywhere, troubleshoot that device or cable instead.
2. Inspect for physical damage
Shut the laptop down and disconnect power. Use a light to inspect the port for lint, corrosion, a bent center tongue, or loose contacts. Do not insert metal tools or spray liquid cleaner inside. Gently remove loose debris with a nonconductive tool only if it is easy to reach; otherwise use qualified service.
Stop using a port that is burned, cracked, unusually hot, wet, or mechanically loose. A damaged port can short the board or accessory.
3. Restart and remove excess load
Restart Windows to clear a temporary controller fault. Disconnect unnecessary USB devices and test again. A bus-powered hub may not supply enough current for storage drives, capture devices, or charging; use the accessory's recommended power adapter or a suitable powered hub.
4. Check Device Manager
- Press Windows + X and open Device Manager.
- Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers and the category for the connected device.
- Look for a warning icon, then open Properties and record the error code.
- Choose Action > Scan for hardware changes.

5. Reinstall a controller only when indicated
If a USB controller shows an error, right-click that specific controller, choose Uninstall device, and restart so Windows can redetect it. Do not indiscriminately remove every controller: the keyboard, touchpad, and recovery peripherals may temporarily stop working. Make sure you can restart without USB input first.
6. Review power management
For a port that fails after sleep, open the USB Root Hub or Generic USB Hub properties in Device Manager. On the Power Management tab, temporarily clear Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power, restart, and test.
You can also test USB selective suspend under Control Panel > Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings > USB settings. This option may be absent on systems using Modern Standby. Disabling it can reduce battery life, so restore the original setting if it does not fix the fault.
7. Check whether Windows sees a storage device
Open Disk Management and look for the drive. A disk may be offline, unallocated, missing a drive letter, or use an unsupported file system. When repair is needed
If the port has no power, works only when the plug is held at an angle, disconnects when moved, or fails outside Windows as well, suspect hardware. Back up important files and arrange service.
