Google Translate is about to have a 'language learning' feature to compete with Duolingo?

For nearly 20 years, Google Translate has been known as a quick, convenient tool for translating words or phrases. But soon, the role of this application may expand much more thanks to a new experimental feature called Practice .

According to some users, the Practice mode integrates AI-powered interactive lessons that help users not only translate but also practice languages ​​systematically. Currently, there are only four languages ​​in the test list: English, Spanish, French, and Portuguese – of which only Spanish and French are active. Learners can customize their proficiency levels from basic to advanced, while the 'Beginner' option is still being worked on.

The exercises are designed around real-life situations, from ordering food in a restaurant to describing a job. Interestingly, users can personalize the experience by entering their own situation, such as preparing to travel or needing to learn specialized vocabulary. After each practice round, the app suggests the appropriate difficulty level for the next, creating a continuous learning process.

Google Translate doesn't stop there, it also tracks learning progress through the number of words mastered and goals completed. This approach is reminiscent of Duolingo's 'gamification' style, where learning is turned into small daily challenges. Users can change the language, level or delete practice data right in the settings.

While no official announcement has been made, screenshots from the testing phase suggest that Google may be considering a paid upgrade in the future. If this becomes a reality, Google Translate will no longer be just a text translation tool, but a language learning platform that competes directly with specialized apps.

As artificial intelligence increasingly reshapes the language education sector, Google's arrival promises to up the ante, forcing rivals like Duolingo to continue innovating to stay relevant.
