Google goo․gl links will stop working in August 2025
Google announced it would stop making goo.gl available to consumers and developers in 2018. New link generation as well as analytics and management ended a year later for all users.
When https://goo.gl/* was shut down, it had been over 6 years since a new link had been created. On August 25, 2025, 'these URLs will no longer return responses' (404).
Starting August 23, 2024, Google will show a 'This link will no longer work in the near future' watch page when someone clicks into the URL shortener. The user will be able to continue after pressing 'Continue' with the 'Don't show this again' option .
For developers, Google warns 'interstitial pages may cause disruptions in your existing goo.gl link flow' .
For example, if you are using another 302 redirect, the redirect page may prevent the redirect flow from completing correctly. If you've embedded social metadata in your landing page, the transition page may cause these metadata to no longer appear where the original link was displayed. For that reason, we recommend converting these links as soon as possible.
This notice is gradually being rolled out, and Google offers a workaround: 'In case a transition page disrupts your usage, you can prevent it by adding the query parameter 'si=1 ' to existing goo.gl links'.
In 2018, Google wants developers to switch to Firebase Dynamic Links to detect a user's background and send them to the web or app. Google eventually discontinued that service for developers.
