A paid AI plan is worthwhile only when the free tier interrupts work you already do. The upgrade may provide higher usage limits, stronger reasoning models, file analysis, research tools, coding agents, or integration with apps and cloud storage. Those benefits differ enough that price alone is a poor way to choose.

ChatGPT: the broadest general-purpose toolset

ChatGPT Go is the lower-cost step up from Free. Plus adds advanced reasoning, expanded messages and uploads, more image creation, expanded deep research, longer memory and context, projects, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs, and more Codex usage.

Pro is intended for people who use those tools heavily. Both the $100 and $200 tiers include Pro capabilities, but the higher tier carries larger allowances. A subscriber who mainly asks occasional questions or drafts short text is unlikely to recover the extra cost.

Google AI: strongest when Google services are already part of the job

Google AI plans combine Gemini access with Google One storage and features inside Google apps. On the US plan page, Google AI Plus is $9.99 per month and includes 2 TB of storage, while AI Pro is $19.99 and includes 5 TB plus expanded Gemini, Flow, Gemini Notebook, and Workspace-related benefits.

Ultra increases limits further and adds selected premium features, but its price and availability should be checked for the buyer's location. Personal Google AI plans are also different from offerings for Google Workspace business accounts.

Claude: a focused subscription for sustained text and coding work

Claude Pro costs $20 monthly or $200 when billed annually. It adds more usage, more models, unlimited projects, Research, Claude Code, and additional work-focused interfaces. Max is available at $100 and $200 per month for people whose workloads regularly exceed Pro capacity.

The sensible test is capacity: use Pro for a normal billing cycle and note whether limits repeatedly interrupt real work. If they do not, Max adds little practical value.

Perplexity: research-first workflow

Perplexity Pro is $20 per month or $200 per year. It raises limits for research, files, projects, and image generation. Max costs $200 monthly, with a lower monthly equivalent on annual billing, and targets much heavier use.

Microsoft 365 Copilot: value comes from the bundle

Microsoft's consumer offer is packaged with Microsoft 365. Personal is $9.99 per month, Family is $12.99, and Premium is $19.99. The plans include different levels of Copilot use alongside Office apps and OneDrive storage; Premium adds the highest consumer limits and selected agents.

This can be economical for someone already paying for Microsoft 365. It is less directly comparable for a buyer who wants only a standalone chatbot. Business Copilot licensing is separate.

SuperGrok: a higher-priced individual option

SuperGrok is $30 per month. xAI lists higher rate limits, its frontier Grok model, connectors, Expert, and image and video generation among the benefits. It is most relevant to people who specifically prefer Grok or need its ecosystem; it is not automatically a better value merely because it costs more.

Model quality changes too quickly for a permanent “best chatbot” ranking. Review the current pages for ChatGPT, Google AI, Claude, Perplexity, Microsoft 365 Copilot, and SuperGrok. Prefer web checkout when comparing prices because mobile app stores may show different billing terms.

Start with a free plan, then buy the lowest tier that removes a documented constraint. A high-cost plan makes sense only when the extra capacity saves enough time or supports paid work; occasional curiosity is not a reason to spend $100 or $200 each month.
