9 ways to write an excellent essay on IT topic
Everyone jokes that students of technological professions are not strong in writing and creative work. They are often advised to find a service like essayshark.com, which would write an essay for cheap, and they would continue to learn how to code. However, if you could cope with complex mathematical formulas, you can certainly learn how to write an essay. And we will help you with that.
Features of writing an essay on IT
Writing an essay is no different from working on the code. In fact, each essay has a clear structure that you should follow, just like a math formula. The quality of any essay depends on three interrelated components, such as:
- the source material that you intend to use (summaries of the literature you have read, lectures, recordings of discussions, your own reflections, and lessons learned on the problem);
- the quality of processing of available source material (its organization, argumentation, and reasoning);
- argumentation (how closely it relates to the issues raised in your essay).
Usually, the questions and problems posed to you in the process of writing an essay require analytical answers, i.e., searching for an explanation: why something is happening (for what reason) and how it is happening (processes, mechanisms), and the answer does not require a simple description of the facts or a generalization of what is said by others. Naturally, facts, along with available views on the problem, are crucial. However, all of this is only part of the original material you use in your answer, but not the answer to the question.
When you choose a question on a topic before you plan your answer, make sure you have read it carefully and understood it correctly, as it can be interpreted differently. There are several approaches to highlight it. In doing so, the question's content may cover a wide range of issues that require a lot of literature. In this case, you may decide that you will only cover and illustrate certain aspects of the issue. You will not have any problems if you do not go beyond the outlined scope, and your choice is well-founded, and you can back it up with appropriate evidence.
Based on your decision on how you will answer the question, you should plan/structure your answer. The structure of the written work usually consists of components such as:
- Introduction — the essence and explanation of the choice of this topic;
- Main body — a reasoned disclosure of the topic based on the material collected (ideas, models, and data).
- Conclusion — generalizations and reasoned conclusions about the topic with an indication of its scope, etc. It is like a sandwich in which a reasoned disclosure of a topic is a filling that represents the desired part.
A well-tested (and for most of us, perfect) way to build any essay is to use subheadings to indicate the key points of an argumentative narrative. This helps to look at what you intend to do (and see if your intention is good). This approach will help you follow the exact goal you have set for this study, rather than walking around the bush. Effective use of subheadings is not just about identifying the main points you want to highlight. Their sequence may also indicate whether the topic is logical or not.
Rules for writing an essay
1. Remember about the topic and purpose of the essay.
Your text should respond to the title and the topic you are raising. Do not go into unnecessary detail unless your idea requires it. Overly detailed descriptions, even artistic ones, can serve you badly;
2. Check with your teacher or employer for an approximate amount of work, and stick to it.
Do not think that your enthusiasm will be appreciated if you write a two-volume book on "Why have I decided to dive into IT?" or "What is higher education for me?" Of course, if you are a future Charles Palahniukor or heir to Nietzsche and know how to attract the reader with ideas or narrative, you can take a chance and write 20-30 pages instead of two or three.
Do you consider yourself a talented writer? Come to the library, open any essay by a famous writer or philosopher, read it. Did you fall asleep on the first page? Compare your style with the style of the author. Does your style not appeal to you frankly? Write short — teachers are also people! Two or three pages is usually quite enough to reveal the topic fully;
3. Split the text into paragraphs, dilute with subheadings if necessary, use visual formatting tools.
The time to read the canvases of the text has passed in the century before last. Nobody is interested in your ability to save an idea in one paragraph for a whole page. People will simply not finish reading such a paragraph. Make your text comfortable for the reader, even if you have just one;
4. Avoid a long introduction.
You write for a prepared reader (probably only the one who gave you the topic for your essay). You do not need to tell about the relevance of the problem, the importance of its solution for the modern person, don't list the goals and objectives of the essay, as you did in your coursework. Start right away. The same goes for the conclusion. Do not waste the reader's time;
5. There should be a structure in your text.
An introduction and conclusion should be the standard, even if they are just one or two lines long. It is important to structure the main body, as well. Decide where you put the problem, where you justify it, or describe it. The problem and its argumentation must be in one form or another. You can formulate the problem both in the introduction and conclusion. Or in the middle of the text. The main thing is to save logic and structure;
6. Avoid milk-and-water.
There may be technical and semantic milk-and-water. Technical ones refer to all filler words, an abundance of introductory phrases and words — everything that makes the text difficult to read. Semantic milk-and-water is everything that makes no sense, does not correspond to the topic, and is not required in the text at all. It might be challenging to filter the text, so you should stick to the topic as you write;
7. Do not write by hand.
You may be asked to sketch a short essay at an interview or during a class. In such a situation, there is nowhere to — you have to take a blank sheet of paper and practice calligraphy. If you can write an essay at home, do not handwrite it. An excuse like "I do not have a computer" will not work. 90% of students have laptops or at least a tablet (and you can write something on a tablet too).
8. Use a graphic editor and spell checker.
Highlight headings, and place a line spacing that makes the text readable. Make sure that your essay is pleasant to read. And pay attention to spell check and punctuation. Before submitting an essay, let a competent person read it. It is possible for a classmate, a professional proofreader, or an editor. You may use special tools like Grammarly.
9. Reread the text before sending it.
Remove all typos and misprints. The misprints spoil the text and the impression of it. Some teachers are ready to forgive even a sea of mistakes (yes, not always students have perfect literacy). However, they will never forgive inattention to the text, characterized by an abundance of misprints.
