10 cities with the fastest internet speeds in the world
The need for super-fast internet connections has become a necessity around the world. It's 2025, and there's nothing wrong with wanting to watch 4K HDR videos on streaming services or load web pages in a flash. This is especially true when average global internet speeds have increased significantly over the past year.
We've covered the countries with the fastest internet speeds before. But have you ever wondered what the world's major cities are offering? The latest data from internet speed analytics company Ookla gives us a look at which cities will have the fastest internet by mid-2025.
According to the Speedtest Global Index , Lyon, France, tops the list with the fastest average fixed broadband speeds . Here are the top 10 cities:

---|---|---|
1. | Lyon, France | 347.52 Mbps |
2. | Abu Dhabi, UAE | 344.34 Mbps |

Mobile Broadband
The reality is even more impressive when you consider mobile internet speeds. The global average download and upload speeds are 91.79 Mbps and 13.50 Mbps , respectively .
However, Ar-Rayyan (Qatar) topped the list with a speed of 561.48 Mbps – almost 61% faster than Lyon's fixed broadband speed.
One area where wired internet outperforms wireless is latency . The global average latency is 8ms (fixed network) and 25ms (mobile network).
Here are the 10 cities with the fastest mobile internet:
Class | City | Download speed |
---|---|---|
1. | Ar-Rayyan, Qatar | 561.48 Mbps |

Middle Eastern cities dominate the top spots, thanks to their aggressive 5G rollouts in recent years. Meanwhile, no US cities make the top 20, despite commercial hubs like Los Angeles and New York achieving speeds above 200Mbps.
Note that the speeds in the Speedtest Global Index are averages, not peak speeds. According to Ookla, average speeds more accurately reflect real-world user experiences, since they're less affected by outliers (e.g., a small number of users with extremely fast connections).
