Lucky Eggs in Pokémon GO: How They Work and How to Use Them

A Lucky Egg is a consumable item that doubles the XP you earn for 30 minutes. It affects XP awarded while the timer is active, including eligible rewards from catches, evolutions, raids, research, Egg hatches, and Friendship level increases.

It does not double Stardust, Candy, PokéCoins, or the contents of an Egg. Because the effect is timed, preparation matters more than activating it during an ordinary play session.

What a Lucky Egg does

After activation, the game displays a countdown for the 30-minute bonus. XP credited before the timer begins or after it expires is not doubled. If an event already offers an XP multiplier, check the event details and in-game Today view to see how it combines with a Lucky Egg.

Old examples that assign one fixed XP value to every catch or hatch can be misleading. XP depends on the action, bonuses, and current event rules, but the Lucky Egg's role is straightforward: it multiplies eligible XP earned during its active period.

Where to get Lucky Eggs

Lucky Eggs may be included in certain level-up rewards, research or event rewards, and bundles in the in-game Shop. The available bundles and prices can change, so check the item description before spending PokéCoins.

You do not need to use a Lucky Egg as soon as you receive it. Keep it in your Item Bag until several useful XP rewards are ready at once.

How to activate a Lucky Egg

1. From the Map view, tap the Poké Ball menu.
2. Open Items.
3. Scroll to Lucky Egg and tap it.
4. Confirm that the bonus icon and countdown appear before claiming XP rewards.

Use the item only when you are ready—the timer continues in real time even if you spend part of the session in menus or close the app.

How to get more value from the 30 minutes

• Coordinate Friendship bonuses: Agree on a time to open a Gift or complete the interaction that triggers the next Friendship level.
• Queue evolutions: Tag the Pokémon and collect the Candy in advance so you can move through the list efficiently.
• Plan raids: Activate the Lucky Egg shortly before the raid ends, leaving enough time for lobby and connection delays.
• Hold research rewards: Claim completed tasks only after the bonus is active when their rewards include XP.
• Time Egg hatches: If several Eggs are close to hatching, arrange for the hatch XP to be credited during the timer.

PokéStop spins and routine catches provide XP too, but they usually work best as filler after larger, predictable rewards have been claimed.

Prepare before you start

Clear Pokémon and Item Bag space, check your connection, choose a safe place to play, and open the screens you will need. A short plan prevents storage warnings, searching, or travel time from consuming the bonus.

The right time to use a Lucky Egg is when you can stack several guaranteed XP actions—not at a particular Trainer level or after catching a fixed number of Pokémon.
