Table of Contents
Pokémon GO's current Trainer level cap is 80. The progression curve was rebalanced in October 2025, so the old level-1-to-40 table is no longer accurate. The game now requires 203,353,000 cumulative XP to reach level 80, and advancement through levels 71–80 also includes Level-Up Research.
Current XP totals for key Trainer levels
These figures are cumulative totals: they show all XP required from the beginning of the account to reach the listed level, not only the XP gained since the previous milestone.
| Trainer level | Total XP required |
|---|---|
| Level 10 | 48,000 XP |
| Level 20 | 258,000 XP |
| Level 30 | 1,083,000 XP |
| Level 40 | 3,953,000 XP |
| Level 50 | 12,753,000 XP |
| Level 60 | 34,353,000 XP |
| Level 70 | 85,853,000 XP |
| Level 80 | 203,353,000 XP |
For an intermediate level, open the Trainer profile and read the progress bar. It shows the requirement for the next level and avoids relying on a static table that may be revised again.
Level-Up Research for levels 71–80
XP alone is not enough for the final ten levels. From level 71 through level 80, Trainers must also complete the Level-Up Research assigned to each step. Extra XP continues to accumulate while the tasks are unfinished and carries toward later progress.
Open the Trainer profile and use the Research control beside the XP progress area to review the active objectives and rewards. Tasks can involve several parts of the game, so plan them alongside normal play rather than waiting until the XP bar is full.
Why the old level-40 table is wrong
The original article treated level 40 as the maximum and listed the launch-era XP curve. Pokémon GO later raised the cap to 50 and then introduced a rebalanced 1–80 journey. Earlier level-up task requirements were also changed; the current Level-Up Research system is associated with levels 71–80.
Accounts that existed before the rebalancing kept their progress and were placed on the new curve according to the transition rules. That is why two screenshots or guides from different periods may show different level numbers for similar lifetime XP.
How to earn Trainer XP efficiently
Use friendship milestones
Friendship-level increases can provide large XP rewards. Coordinate a Lucky Egg only when the timing is under your control, and never pressure another Trainer to delay normal play indefinitely.
Improve catch quality
Regular catches add up, while Curveball and Nice, Great or Excellent throw bonuses improve the return. Catch-focused events can make this method more efficient when they include an XP multiplier.
Combine raids and event bonuses
Raid victories award XP, and selected events may increase that amount. Compare the cost of passes with your goal rather than raiding only for level progress.
Complete Research and daily activity
Field, Special, Timed and other Research can award XP. PokéStop spins, Pokédex entries, evolution and additional gameplay actions also contribute. Read the displayed reward because amounts and event bonuses change.
When to use a Lucky Egg
A Lucky Egg increases XP earned for a limited time. Activate one when several substantial rewards are ready close together, such as coordinated friendship milestones, a planned raid sequence or an event with strong catch XP. Using one during ordinary low-activity play may provide little value.
Trainer level does not raise the Pokémon level cap to 80
The level-80 update applies to the Trainer profile. It does not mean Pokémon themselves can be powered up to level 80. Keep Trainer progression, Pokémon power-ups and CP-limited battle leagues separate when planning resources.
For the exact next requirement, use the profile progress bar. Use the milestone table above for long-term planning and expect the 71–80 Research tasks to become a second requirement alongside XP.
