Google One is a paid membership that expands the storage attached to a Google Account. The added space is shared across Google Drive, Gmail, Google Photos, and other supported Google services. Some plans also include family sharing, AI features, or other benefits, but those extras vary by plan, country, account type, and time.
Google One does not replace Drive, Gmail, or Photos. It changes the storage allowance and may add benefits to the same Google Account you already use.
What Google One includes
Every Google One plan adds cloud storage. Before subscribing, check which service is using your current quota: large Drive files, Gmail attachments, and photo or video backups can all draw from the same pool. If you only need to reduce usage, deleting unneeded files and emptying the relevant trash folders may be enough.
Higher-tier memberships may include access to Google AI features or extra benefits in products such as Google Photos. Google changes plan names and entitlements, so confirm the current details on the official Google One plans page while signed in to the account you intend to use. Prices can also differ by country, taxes, and billing platform.
If you are comparing providers rather than committed to Google, see TipsMake's overview of lower-cost cloud storage options.
How family sharing works
Eligible Google One memberships can be shared through a Google family group. The plan manager can generally share the membership with up to five other people. Each member keeps a separate Google Account, and their files are not automatically visible to anyone else. Family members can, however, see how much shared storage each person is using.
Not every plan or benefit is shareable. Family-group eligibility, country rules, age requirements, and account restrictions can also apply. Google's family-sharing instructions show the current requirements.
Google One and Gemini
Google's AI memberships are now presented under names such as Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra in supported markets. The included Gemini models, usage limits, storage, and integrations can change. A personal subscription also may not provide the same features on a work or school account managed by an organization.
Choose an AI plan only if its current benefits match work you already do. If you mainly need storage, a storage-focused plan may be the better fit. Avoid selecting a plan from an old screenshot or price table because Google can rename or restructure memberships.
Features that are no longer part of Google One
VPN by Google One
VPN by Google One was discontinued in June 2024. Old instructions that tell subscribers to enable it in the Google One app no longer apply. Some Pixel devices offer a separate VPN by Google feature, but that is not the former Google One benefit and device eligibility differs.
Dark web report
Google removed dark web report from Google One membership and later handled the feature through Google Search for eligible users. Availability and controls have changed, so do not subscribe to Google One specifically for this feature. For account protection, review recent security activity, enable two-step verification, use unique passwords, and follow Google's current account-security guidance.
TipsMake's guide to creating a secure password covers a useful first step.
How to subscribe
- Sign in to the Google Account that needs more storage.
- Open Google One on the web or in the Google One app.
- Compare the storage amount, shareable benefits, renewal price, and cancellation terms shown for your region.
- Select a plan and review the payment account before confirming.
- If needed, open the family settings after activation and enable sharing for an existing Google family group.
Before paying, make sure you are using the correct personal account. Storage and benefits stay with the account that buys the membership; they are not transferred merely because two accounts are signed in on the same device.
Should you subscribe?
Google One makes sense when your Google Account regularly needs more space, your household can use a shared storage pool, or you specifically need benefits included in a current AI plan. It is less compelling if you can reclaim enough space for free, need end-to-end encrypted storage that Google does not provide, or want a full device-backup system independent of Google's services.
A subscription increases capacity, but it is not a complete backup strategy. Keep a separate copy of irreplaceable files, and periodically verify that photos and documents are actually syncing. For ideas on working more efficiently with stored files, see these Google Drive browser extensions.
