On The Key, Google claims that Chromebook Plus models will have "twice the performance" in addition to built-in productivity features and, most importantly, a certain level of performance. Chromebook Plus minimum hardware specifications are:

  1. CPU : Intel Core i3 12th generation or higher or AMD Ryzen 3 7000 series or higher
  2. RAM : 8GB+
  3. Memory : 128GB+

Google is raising the Chromebook Plus's minimum hardware requirements in part for better software support.

For example, Google Photos will now have an AI-powered Magic Eraser feature (rolling out to all Android devices by 2023) to automatically remove image backgrounds and more, along with the option to Choose to automatically create movies as well as other short clips from a series of images.

Chromebook Plus will soon have built-in AI tools

Now, Google isn't stopping at Chromebook Plus minimum specs and new productivity features. It also revealed that Chromebook Plus will receive new AI features from 2024 onwards, many of which are focused on making your life easier based on Google's AI technology. With just a right click, you can get help polishing or Add some intelligence to your words, whether you're writing a restaurant review, a social media post, or a YouTube video description."

From launch, Chromebook Plus laptops will include a dynamic desktop wallpaper engine that changes four times per day. In a future update, Google wants to turn it into a Generative AI tool that will allow any user to enter a prompt and get a unique desktop wallpaper. Google's example is "Van Gogh-style cats," but if it's anything like text-to-image AI engines like Midjourney or DALL-E, the options and prompts is truly limitless.

Should I buy a Chromebook Plus?

With a commitment to increased minimum hardware specifications, upgraded productivity tools, and AI integration, the Chromebook Plus specs could be a great choice for consumers.

Another issue is that Chromebook Plus doesn't mention a corresponding minimum battery performance. If the new Chromebook Plus spec runs more powerful hardware, expect battery life and capacity to be equally enhanced and could keep the Chromebook going all day. Since productivity has always been at the forefront of Chromebook development, it's possible this was considered. Just strange not to see it mentioned in the official announcement.
