How to Use AI for Health Questions More Safely

Use ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and similar chatbots to organize questions and understand terminology—not to diagnose emergencies or change treatment—and verify every important claim.

AI chatbots can explain medical terms, organize questions for an appointment, or help you find topics to discuss with a clinician. They cannot examine you, confirm a diagnosis, reliably judge every emergency, or safely replace a qualified health professional.

The World Health Organization has warned that large language models can produce false, inaccurate, biased, or incomplete health statements. A confident tone is not evidence that an answer is correct. Use the steps below to reduce risk, and never let a chatbot delay urgent care.

Do not use a chatbot for an emergency

If someone has severe difficulty breathing, chest pain or pressure, signs of a stroke, loss of consciousness, uncontrolled bleeding, a severe allergic reaction, or another rapidly worsening or life-threatening problem, contact your local emergency service now. Do not wait for an AI response.

Even a lower-risk use requires verification. A summary can omit a warning, confuse two similar conditions, or invent a citation.

1. State the purpose without asking for a diagnosis

Ask for organization or explanation rather than “What disease do I have?” A safer request identifies the output you need and tells the chatbot to flag uncertainty.

Do not add your own reassurance, such as “It is probably nothing,” or ask the bot to confirm a diagnosis you already suspect. Leading language can shape the response. Describe what happened, when it started, whether it is changing, and any objective measurements you actually have.

2. Give relevant context, but protect private information

Health advice depends on factors such as age group, pregnancy, allergies, existing conditions, current medicines, recent procedures, and country. Missing context can make a general answer unsafe. However, do not paste more personal data than the task requires.

  • Remove full names, addresses, phone numbers, medical-record numbers, insurance details, and account credentials.
  • Do not upload a complete medical record when a short, de-identified excerpt will answer the question.
  • Check the service’s privacy and data-use settings before entering health information.
  • Assume that a general consumer chatbot is not the same as a regulated medical device or a confidential clinical portal.

A product that uses AI is not automatically approved for medical use. The FDA treats qualifying AI-enabled medical software through medical-device pathways; a general-purpose chatbot should not be assumed to have undergone that review.

3. Ask for sources you can actually inspect

Request the organization, page title, publication or review date, and direct link for each important claim. Then open the source. Chatbots can provide nonexistent references or links that do not support the answer.

agency, a recognized medical organization, or a peer-reviewed guideline.

Prefer current guidance from public-health agencies, government health services, major medical organizations, and the clinician responsible for your care. Asking a second chatbot is not independent verification. Two systems may repeat the same error or rely on similar online material. Verify against the underlying source and, when the decision matters, a qualified professional.

4. Separate facts, possibilities, and missing information

Ask the model to label what is directly supported by the information you supplied, what is a general possibility, and what cannot be determined. This makes overconfident language easier to spot.

Using only the attached patient-information page:
- Summarize the confirmed statements.
- List cautions and situations that require medical attention.
- Quote no more than one short phrase from the source.
- Identify anything my question asks that the source does not answer.
- Do not add a diagnosis or personalized treatment recommendation.

A long list of possible diseases is rarely helpful and can create unnecessary alarm. For symptom questions, ask what information a clinician may need and which official service is appropriate in your location, not for a ranked diagnosis.

5. Verify medicines and test results with the right professional

Do not use AI to change a prescription, calculate a personalized dose, check a drug interaction, or interpret an abnormal result on its own. Contact a pharmacist or prescribing clinician for medicine questions. Ask the clinician who ordered a test how the result fits your symptoms, history, reference range, and other findings.

For poison exposure or a possible overdose, contact your local poison center or emergency service instead of experimenting with chatbot advice. For pregnancy, infants, older adults, and people with complex conditions, general information may be especially poor at reflecting individual risk.

6. Bring the output to the appointment as notes, not a verdict

A useful AI-generated appointment sheet is brief:

  • a symptom timeline;
  • current medicines and known allergies, checked against your own records;
  • questions you want answered;
  • links to the official pages you consulted; and
  • a clear note showing which wording came from AI and still needs confirmation.

Tell the clinician when an AI answer influenced your concern or a decision. That context helps them correct misunderstandings.

Why “testing” a chatbot is not enough

Asking a chatbot one question with a known answer does not establish that it will be reliable on a different symptom or person. Performance varies with the prompt, model version, available tools, and subject. A system can reject a familiar conspiracy theory and still give unsafe individualized advice in the next exchange.

Likewise, a disclaimer at the end of a response does not repair incorrect content above it. Judge the claim by its evidence and the appropriate standard of care, not by fluency, confidence, or agreement from another model.

A practical verification checklist

  • Urgency: Could waiting cause harm? If yes or unsure, use a clinician, urgent-care service, poison center, or emergency service.
  • Scope: Is the chatbot explaining information, or making a diagnosis or treatment decision it cannot safely make?
  • Source: Does the cited page exist, support the claim, and apply to your situation?
  • Date: Is the guidance current, especially for medicines, infectious disease, and screening recommendations?
  • Privacy: Have unnecessary identifiers and sensitive files been removed?
  • Professional review: Has a doctor, pharmacist, nurse, or other appropriate professional confirmed the decision?
