Table of mass measurement units, how to convert mass measurement units

What is the mass unit table? How is the mass conversion table? Let's find out together!

Humans have recognized the need for standards of weights and measures, as they are called, since the earliest civilizations, so that everyone understands what they are getting when they buy something. All over the world, you see hanging scales in markets to weigh produce and other foods. Even in the age of automated food scales at the checkout counter, you still see hanging scales in grocery stores.

For example, when you go to the grocery store to buy cereal, there will be a label on the shelf that tells you the price per ounce of cereal so you can compare prices between different brands. Without a standard unit of weight, in this case an ounce, you wouldn't know exactly what you were paying for.

In the metric system, the gram is not the only unit of measurement used. Like length and capacity, mass has multiples and submultiples. Multiples are used to represent units larger than the gram, and submultiples are used to represent units smaller than the gram.

Do you remember what the prefixes of multiples and divisors are?

  1. Multiples: kilo, hecto, deca
  2. Divisors: a deci, centi, milli

The table of mass measurement units and how to convert mass measurement units will be introduced by TipsMake in the article below, please refer to it.

1. What is the unit of mass?

A unit of mass is a unit used to weigh a specific object to help us know the mass of that object.

For example:

  1. Duong weighs 62kg.
  2. The bag of rice weighs 5 yen.

2. Table of mass measurement units

The table of mass units is arranged in order from largest to smallest:

Specifically, the units of mass are as follows:

  1. 1 ton = 10 quintals = 1000kg
  2. 1 quintal = 10 yen = 100 kg
  3. 1 bird's nest = 10kg
  4. 1kg = 10hg = 1000g
  5. 1 hour = 10 days = 100g
  6. 1 day = 10g

3. How to convert units of mass

To be able to convert between units of mass, you need to understand the following rules:

Rule 1 : When converting a mass unit from a larger unit to a smaller one, add 1 zero (multiply that number by 10) to that number. If there is one unit in between, add 2 zeros and if there are 2 units, add 3 zeros.

For example:

  1. 2 tons = 20 quintals = 200 yen = 2000 kg
  2. 9 kg = 90 hg = 900 dag = 9000g

Rule 2 : To convert a unit of mass from a smaller unit to the next larger unit, divide that number by 10 (or subtract 1 zero from that number), for every 1 unit, divide by 100 (subtract 2 zeros).

For example:

  1. 5000g = 500dag = 50hg = 5kg
  2. 8000kg = 800 yen = 80 quintals = 8 tons

4. Example

Example 1. Converting units of mass

  1. 12 yen = 120kg (the yen unit is right before the kg unit so just take 12x10)
  2. 10 tons = 10,000,000g (ton is 5 units away from g so we have 10x1000,000)
  3. 100 quintals = 100,000 kilograms (quintal is 2 units away from kilograms so we have 100x1000)
  4. 2000g = 20hg (g is 1 unit away from hg so we have 2000/100)

Example 2 : Calculations with mass units

If the units of measurement are the same, we perform calculations with mass, keeping the same unit. If the units of measurement are different, we must convert to the same unit of measurement before performing calculations.

  1. 17kg + 3kg = 20kg
  2. 23kg + 123g = 23000g + 123g = 23123g
  3. 54kg x 2 = 108kg
  4. 1055g : 5 = 211g
  5. 6 quintals 4 swallows + 20 kg = 640 kg + 20 kg = 660 kg

Example 3 : Comparison

  1. 600g and 60dag

Convert 60dag = 600g => 600g = 60dag

  1. 6 kg and 7000g

Convert 6kg = 6000g => 6kg < 7000g

  1. 4 tons 3 quintals 5 yen and 4370 kg

Convert 4 tons = 4000kg

3 quintals = 300kg

5 bird's nest = 50kg

=> 4 tons 3 quintals 5 yen = 4350 kg => 4 tons 3 quintals 5 yen < 4370 kg
