Pixel Fold, Google's first folding phone, what to expect?
Google has yet to enter the folding smartphone market, but this will change. The company is expected to launch its first foldable product, simply called the Pixel Fold, at the Google I/O event in May 2023. Here are some of the things users can expect to see in the Pixel Fold by Google.
Large screen and durable hinges
Google has improved its smartphone design with the Pixel 6 and 7 series. So it would make sense if Google used a similar design for its folding phone. Thanks to information from Front Page Tech, we can get an idea of what the Pixel Fold will look like.
It will look very similar to the Pixel 7 Pro from the rear, with a glass back and similar camera bar. According to CNBC: "Pixel Fold, known by the codename "Felix" internally, will have the most durable hinge on a folding phone."
Other leaks about the design have been posted by HowToiSolve. Kuba Wojciechowski, a famous Twitter user, posted a very short clip of the device in action.
Potential improvements to the hinge could help address some of the concerns users have about the durability of folding phones. Regarding the display, Jon Prosser, from Front Page Tech, released a video providing the display dimensions, alongside other details about the device.
The Pixel Fold is said to have a 7.6-inch folding display, the same screen size we saw in the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 review. The outer display will be 5.8 inches and both screens will have a refresh rate of 120Hz.
Tensor G2 chip
Prosser also detailed that the Pixel Fold will have a Tensor G2 chip. This will be the third high-end smartphone to feature the Tensor G2 chip, in line with MySmartPrice's report on the Pixel Fold showing up on Geekbench.
The listing shows no difference in core count or clock speed of the chip, which means you can expect similar performance to other Google flagships. The Pixel Fold will also have 12GB RAM and a Titan M2 coprocessor.
Big battery
Other foldable smartphones offer decent battery life, but certainly not the best. When it comes to the Pixel Fold, CNBC's report says that the device will be able to 'last for 24 hours or up to 72 hours in low power mode'.
We could see solid battery life for folding phones in Google's device, but it will have to be seen how it performs in practice, as there are other factors that contribute to good battery life for phones. smartphone besides the size of the battery.
Three camera system
Pixel Fold is said to have a total of 5 cameras. Prosser claims that it will include a 48 MP main camera with f/1.7 aperture, a 10.8 MP ultra-wide camera with f/2.2 aperture, and a 10.8 MP telephoto camera with f/3.05 aperture.
The telephoto camera will have 5x optical zoom and 20x Super Res Zoom. As for the selfie camera, the front camera on the external screen will be 9.5MP, while the internal screen camera will be 8MP.
In addition to hardware, the Pixel Fold will support the same software camera features as the Pixel 7 series, such as Magic Eraser, Photo Unblur, etc.
Android 13
If the Pixel Fold releases on June 27, as Prosser mentioned in his video, then we can expect the Pixel Fold to launch with Android 13. This means you can expect the New media playback, additional customization options, etc.
Of course, since it's a Google product, the Pixel Fold will receive Android 14 as soon as it releases in 2023, as Google's phones quickly receive major Android OS updates.
A high price
The price of a folding smartphone produced by Google will be the main factor that decides whether consumers buy it or not. Prosser says the device will cost $1,799 for the 256GB option. The Pixel Fold will also be available in a 512GB version for $1,919.
If the final price is accurate, the Pixel Fold will certainly be Google's most expensive smartphone in the lineup. So if you want to keep up with the trends and want Google's hardware, you'll have to pay a pretty high price.
