The world's first tri-folding smartphone
TCL's subsidiary CSOT (China Star Optoelectronics Technology) introduced a new phone model equipped with a 7.85-inch screen when fully opened and can be folded three times, instead of folding in half as currently, at the Smart Display Exhibition. news (SID) 2024 is taking place in San Jose (USA).
According to the manufacturer's introduction, the new screen is called Free-type, and can be folded in a Z or G shape or expanded like a tablet. The panel offers high brightness, low power consumption and long lifespan thanks to the integration of a series of leading technologies, such as Tandem, LTPO and PLP.
This tri-fold smartphone is only 0.472 mm thin when opened and 17 mm when folded. The number is acceptable for an early tri-fold smartphone.
The smartphone is also equipped with a number of other new technologies such as the world's first under-screen facial authentication feature. TCL said that it has applied this advanced technology to the sensor system under the dashboard (SUP), supporting 3D facial recognition even when obscured, combining a separate security layer that allows users to Seamless and secure biometric authentication experience. Although the pixel density in this area is lower than the remaining areas at 420 ppi, it is still enough to display consistent content.
TCL has not announced the screen resolution, specifications, price and product sale time. Previously, there were also rumors that Huawei and Samsung were developing three-fold smartphones, but they had not yet launched.
