Thunderbird is Mozilla's award-winning and free solution for more efficient mail management for users. And there are many advantages to switching to this tool.

For example, unlike the Mail app, it can handle virtual identities and create addresses quickly, which many consider to be one of the best spam filters out there. Most recently, Thunderbird has been updated with an attractive tabbed interface to make email management easier.

The fact that like Firefox, Mozilla Thunderbird can be enhanced with all sorts of extensions, making it an extremely competitive mail client. It's also much faster and more stable than before thanks to Gecko 5.

Thunderbird Features

Simple setup

Setting up Mozilla Thunderbird is incredibly simple. You can quickly import mail and contacts from an Outlook or Mail account and set up a POP3, IMAP or SMTP account in a flash. To help you always organize your email the best, Mozilla Thunderbird provides filters to put mail into separate folders and inboxes. And of course, there's a built-in spell checker to ensure that mails are professionally created.

What makes Mozilla Thunderbird a little out of the ordinary is the fact that it comes with an integrated RSS reader. These days, this is outdated, as many people use a separate application - or even Firefox itself - to follow the RSS feed, but this can be useful if you want to send mail and follow the feed. RSS feed at the same time when composing a message.

Search for mail quickly

The search engine in Thunderbird is great, and the search happens in real time as you type. Search results are displayed in a separate tab. Tabs in general are a very important part of Thunderbird and like Firefox, you can have multiple messages open in separate tabs. This is a great feature of Thunderbird. Archiving is another handy feature for those who don't want to delete messages but want to free up space in their inbox.

So what about security? You might think that an open source mail client is inherently less secure than a paid app, but Thunderbird is surprisingly secure with a great spam filter. The reason is that Thunderbird is regularly updated by volunteers whose primary concern is to make a better product instead of making a profit from the final product. Security updates are frequent but small enough not to slow down Thunderbird.

Exchange support

One of the biggest advantages of Mozilla Thunderbird is that it offers Microsoft Exchange support, which means it will appeal to previous Office users.

On the other hand, the app lacks certain features. Thunderbird still doesn't have the same conversation-style email views in Gmail (though an extension to do this can be downloaded separately), nor does it have many options for managing attachments and image. There's also no calendar but again, the calendar can be downloaded separately with the "Lightning" add-on .

Overall, Thunderbird is a great free alternative to Microsoft Outlook.
