Microsoft will update Windows to permanently remove Internet Explorer
This information comes at a time when Internet Explorer is officially no longer supported on Windows 10.
"For now, users will still see the Internet Explorer icon on their device (such as on the taskbar or in the Start Menu) but if they click to open Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge will be opened with instructions for ease of use." easy access to IE mode (Internet Explorer mode)," shared Sean Lyndersay, General Manager of Microsoft Edge Enterprise.
"In the future, Internet Explorer will be permanently disabled after a Windows update. At that point, the Internet Explorer icon on the user's device will be removed."
During this migration, user data (including settings, favorites, and passwords) will be imported into Microsoft Edge.
Microsoft will also add a "Reload in IE Mode" button and Edge toolbar for users to quickly launch pages that require opening with Internet Explorer in IE mode.
In fact, since October 2020, Internet Explorer has automatically opened Microsoft Edge every time users visit incompatible websites (with IE). The list of incompatible sites is managed by Microsoft and currently has 1,427 pages, including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Google Drive, Microsoft Teams.
Microsoft Edge is the future
Although support has been officially discontinued on many versions of Windows 10 and is not installed on Windows 11, Internet Explorer will still be available on Windows 7 ESU, Windows 8.1 and all Windows 10 LTSC editions for client, server, and IoT.
On those versions of Windows, Internet Explorer will continue to receive technical support and security updates until the end of the lifecycle of the versions of Windows on which it is running.
Over the years, Microsoft has consistently encouraged customers to switch from Internet Explorer to Microsoft Edge. The built-in IE mode in Microsoft Edge also helps customers and users deal with web pages that only run on Internet Explorer.
To give customers more incentive, Microsoft, Google, Apple have gradually stopped supporting their products, services and websites on Internet Explorer.
