Microsoft is about to delete Windows Media Player, switch to Movies & TV?
Perhaps Windows Media Player will be the next name on the list of old things removed from Windows 10. Microsoft is starting to push users to switch to the pre-installed UWP Mivoes & TV application on the OS.
A screenshot posted on reddit shows that Microsoft used a popup when users opened Windows Media Player to introduce the features of the Movies & TV app. Calling users to the new application may be a precursor to the death of the old player.
Popup writes: 'Open with new Windows 10 Video Player?' then offers features like support for MKV and 4K, longer battery life on laptops, support for small frame views, support for 360 videos. There are 2 Movies & App options to use as default or to open apps.

Ignoring the name, this application may also be a good alternative to Windows Media Player, though of course still need a lot of improvement.
3rd party alternatives
Even if Windows Media Player is killed, users still have many other options such as VLC that also supports many Windows versions.
However on Windows 10 S, because it is impossible to install Win32 software, the choice will be less. There are only a few similar apps on Microsoft Store so you will almost be forced to use Movies & TV.
It has been many years since Windows Media Player has not improved, so if it is 'retired' it is not too surprising. Although WMP is still available and is a choice of many people, this software is quite outdated.
