Micron launches the world's first PCIe Gen 6 SSD, 26GBps speed
According to the press release, Micron's first PCIe Gen 6 hard drive can achieve sequential read speeds of more than 26GB/s, nearly double the peak speeds currently available on the market. For reference, the fastest PCIe Gen 5 SSD model ever produced tops out at around 14GB/s. That is Micron's own Crucial T705 model, which can provide sequential read speeds of 14,500MB/s.
Users will have to wait a little longer to own the first commercial version of PCIe Gen 6 SSD. Additionally, there are currently no consumer platforms that support PCIe Gen 6 — the latest motherboards from Intel and AMD can only work with PCIe Gen 5 SSDs.
In the early stages, PCIe Gen 6 hard drives will likely be primarily oriented for use in data centers and edge devices, to promote AI system architecture, providing fast storage capabilities. and increase energy efficiency. Micron will reveal more information about the world's first PCIe Gen 6 SSD at the upcoming Flash Memory Summit 2024, and present its plan to build a PCIe ecosystem. Industry first Gen 6.
Similar to the T705 for general commercial users, Micron recently announced the 9550, which is said to be the "world's fastest data center SSD", with capacities up to 30.72TB. The manufacturer says its 26GB/s Gen 6 solid-state drive builds on that announcement.
Flash Memory Summit 2024 will take place August 6-8 at the Santa Clara Convention Center. Visitors can see Micron's latest developments, demos and interactive kiosks live at the event.
