iOS 15.4 Beta can unlock Face ID even when wearing a mask, no Apple Watch required

The newly released iOS 15.4 beta has added a new feature designed to allow users to use Face ID even while wearing a mask.

Apple says the feature can use unique, unique features around each person's eyes for authentication. If you choose to use this feature during the installation process, you will need to rescan your face for FaceID. Face ID will then be able to unlock your iPhone even if you're wearing a mask.

In the Settings application, there is an option "Use Face ID with a Mask" for you to turn it off or on as needed. In addition, there is an Add Galsses option to make Face ID more accurate when you wear both glasses and a mask at the same time.

Apple warns that Face ID will work best when you set it to use your entire face. When using Face ID with a mask, you'll have to look directly at your iPhone to unlock it and don't wear sunglasses.

According to Apple, currently the Face ID unlock feature when wearing a mask only supports iPhone 12 and above. Other Face ID iPhone models such as iPhone 11 or earlier (up to iPhone X) are not yet supported.

Previously, Apple also allowed users with Apple Watch to unlock their iPhone while wearing a mask. This is not necessarily a useful feature because not everyone owns an Apple Watch.

iOS 15.4 Beta is now rolling out to developers participating in Apple's beta program. If the test is successful, Apple will launch new features for users.
