What are Fallen Leaves in Minecraft?

Fallen Leaves are a naturally-generating decorative block in the Minecraft world. Unlike regular Leaves, Fallen Leaves do not regenerate after you destroy them, making them a finite resource in the world. They form a ground cover, making the forest floor look more natural and alive. The color of Fallen Leaves depends on the biome, meaning they will change color to match their surroundings.

How to find fallen leaves

Fallen Leaves only appear naturally in certain biomes during world generation, scattered on the ground in Biomes such as Forest, Dark Forest, and Wooded Badlands. If you want to collect fallen leaves for decoration, exploring these biomes is the only way to find them in the wild.

However, you can also create fallen leaves yourself by smelting any Leaf block in a furnace.

How leaf fall works

Fallen Leaves work differently than regular Leaves blocks. Each block can contain up to 4 layers of fallen leaves. You can add more layers by placing more fallen leaves on the same tile. Each layer can have 4 different orientations, creating slight variations that make the ground look more natural.

Fallen Leaves can be placed on any solid block with a full top surface, such as Cobblestone or Dirt. Since it is a replaceable block, it does not hinder building, and can be easily broken or built over without any effect.

Additionally, fallen leaves can be used as fuel in a furnace, or put into the Compost Bin to create Bone Meal.
