Getting started is easy. Like other chatbot apps, including ChatGPT, you can ask almost anything and get an answer. Optionally, you can take a photo or import a file directly from the app. You can also ask the AI to generate different images. All responses use the newly released Grok 2 model.

When you ask a question about the weather or a restaurant, you'll see an information card. The text and images generated can be easily shared with others on social media, email, text, or elsewhere.

You don't need an account to start using the app, but you'll be limited in the number of responses you can receive. If you don't sign in to your account, you also won't be able to see responses to previous questions.

Sign in with your X account, email, or Google or Apple. There's also a lock screen widget for quick access to the app. The app is available for free download on the App Store.

Expand your Chatbot's reach

Rumors of a standalone app for Elon Musk's AI began to swirl late last year. In early December, Grok became free for anyone with an X account. Previously, you had to sign up for a paid subscription to X, which started at $7 a month.

Grok launched in late 2023, but has lagged behind some other popular options in both users and features. Introducing a standalone app that doesn't require any X accounts could help expand its reach to a wider audience.

Unlike its competitors, Grok has plenty of sarcasm and wit, thanks to Musk's influence on chatbots.

But while this chatbot is free, it is significantly different from ChatGPT or other chatbots and has some major issues. It has weak ethics protections and very unmoderated image generation. It also trains itself using information from X, which is rife with bots and scams.
