The original Mafia is available on Steam, but an old limited-time free promotion has ended. Check the current price and any active discount on the official store page instead of relying on an expired “free until September 6” offer.
Mafia was released in 2002. It follows taxi driver Tommy Angelo after an encounter draws him into the Salieri crime family in the fictional city of Lost Heaven. The game combines story missions, driving, on-foot exploration, and third-person combat in a 1930s setting.
What the original Mafia includes
- More than 20 story missions built around Tommy’s rise within the Salieri family.
- A large period-inspired city with driving and on-foot objectives.
- More than 60 historically inspired vehicles with damage and handling systems.
- A selection of firearms and melee weapons, including baseball bats, shotguns, handguns, and a Tommy gun.
The classic release is different from Mafia: Definitive Edition, the later remake. Confirm the title and release before buying so that you do not mistake one edition for the other.
Check the price and add the game to Steam
- Open the official Mafia Steam page.
- Confirm that the listing is the 2002 game and review the current price, language support, mature-content notice, and compatibility information.
- If you want the game, select Add to Cart and complete the purchase through Steam. Pricing and promotions vary by region and date.
- Open the Steam desktop client, go to Library, select Mafia, and choose Install.
- Select an installation location, wait for the download to finish, and launch the game from the library.
For a broader checkout walkthrough, see how to buy games on Steam. The general guide to installing a game on a PC covers common installation steps.
Minimum system requirements
The current Steam listing gives these minimum requirements for the classic release:
- Operating system: Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, or 10 listed for the game; however, the current Steam client supports Windows 10 and later.
- Processor: 1.4 GHz or faster.
- Memory: 2 GB RAM.
- Graphics: DirectX 9.0-compatible 3D graphics card.
- DirectX: Version 9.0.
- Storage: 3 GB available space.
- Sound: DirectX 9.0c-compatible sound card.
Steam also notes that Windows 8 and later require DirectPlay for this release. Because the game is much older than current Windows versions, successful installation does not guarantee perfect behavior on every modern system.
If Mafia does not start
- Restart Steam and verify the game files from Properties > Installed Files.
- Install pending Windows and graphics-driver updates from the device or hardware vendor.
- If Windows requests DirectPlay, enable it through the supported Windows Features prompt rather than downloading replacement DLL files from unofficial sites.
- Check the Steam community and publisher support information for issues specific to the classic release.
- Avoid random “fixed executables,” repacks, or DLL download sites; they can introduce malware and may violate the game’s license.
Classic or Definitive Edition?
Choose the 2002 version if you specifically want the original mission design, driving model, presentation, and historical PC release. Choose Mafia: Definitive Edition if you want the modern remake with rebuilt visuals, expanded presentation, and different system requirements. They are separate products, so compare both store pages before purchasing.
