Claude officially allows free data import from ChatGPT.
Anthropic is taking new steps to make it easier for users to switch to the AI chatbot Claude.
Over time, Claude has been highly praised by the programming community and AI enthusiasts. However, the app has also frequently received complaints because many advanced features are only available to paid users, while free accounts are quite limited.
Now, Claude is gradually catching up with competitors like ChatGPT by making the memory feature available to free users as well.
Claude added the ability to remember and import data from other chatbots.
This move comes shortly after Claude surpassed ChatGPT on the App Store to become the most downloaded free app in the US.
One factor that may have fueled the surge in interest in Claude is OpenAI's recent announcement of a partnership with the United States Department of Defense. This news came just one day after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei expressed concerns about the government's use of AI without sufficient limitations.
In addition to the free memory feature, Claude also introduced an import tool that allows users to bring their 'AI context' with them when switching from other chatbots.
Essentially, this tool acts as a special reminder to retrieve data from other chatbots. This ensures that new users don't have to start from scratch when using Claude.
After data entry, within approximately 24 hours, Claude can remember much of the information you previously shared with chatbots, such as:
- personal guidance
- job
- ongoing projects
As a result, subsequent conversations with Claude will feel more natural and contextually relevant.
How to enable the free note-taking feature in Claude
Although the memory feature is available to free users, it is not enabled by default.
To activate it, simply open the Claude app or website, tap your profile icon, and then go to Settings. Under Capabilities, you'll find a section called New Memory. Here, enable the option Generate memory from chat history.
Once activated, Claude will automatically begin memorizing important information from conversations.
According to Anthropic, the system will automatically summarize chat content and aggregate important information from chat history (except for conversations within the project). This summary will be updated every 24 hours to provide context for new conversations.
For example, if you are a dentist and have previously asked Claude about dental implant research, the next time you ask a related question, the chatbot will understand that you are researching this field.
Users can still control their personal data.
Enabling memory means Claude will remember some of the user's personal or contextual data. However, Anthropic also provides control options.
Users can pause the memory feature using the "Pause memory" option, allowing the chatbot to retain old data but not create new data.
Alternatively, you can also choose Reset memory to completely erase all data that Claude has saved, including information related to projects.
How to import data from ChatGPT or Gemini into Claude
In the Memory settings, users will also find the new Import feature.
When you click the Start Import button, Claude will provide a special prompt. You need to copy this and paste it into other chatbots like Gemini or ChatGPT to extract the data.
The results will be exported as a Markdown file. Then, simply return to Claude, paste the file contents into the input field, and select Add to memory. Claude will analyze the data and add it to its memory system.
