Claude offers its AI memo feature for free, directly competing with ChatGPT.

Claude is making an impressive comeback in 2026. The Claude app on iOS has just risen to number one in the US and is in the top 10 productivity apps in over 100 countries.

To capitalize on this growth and attract more free users, Claude has brought its AI memory feature – previously only available on the paid plan – to the free plan. Users can now have Claude reference previous conversations to provide more contextually relevant responses.

How does the 'memory' feature make the chat experience different?

If you've ever used AI chatbots, you'll recognize a familiar inconvenience: every time you start a new project, you have to repeat the same set of instructions. Claude solves this problem by allowing the system to retrieve content from old conversations, extract relevant context, and seamlessly continue the exchange.

Instead of being a 'disjointed session,' conversations now become a continuous sequence. As a result, feedback is more intelligent and contextually relevant.

Users can also ask Claude to retrieve information from previous conversations. Notably, storage can be limited per project, helping to separate personal and work content.

The free memory expansion adds to the range of features already available in the free version, such as app connectivity, file creation, repetitive workflows, longer conversations, image search, and many other utilities.

A major barrier for new users is that their chat history is stored on another platform, such as ChatGPT. Anthropic – the company behind Claude – has come up with a solution: a memory import tool.

Users can import chat history from other chatbots into Claude without requiring that platform to officially support data export. Claude provides a ready-made prompt to import into the current chatbot, consolidating the entire chat history into a single conversation. Users then simply copy the response and import it into Claude.

According to Anthropic, the memory synchronization process can take up to 24 hours.

This method is said to be compatible with most popular chatbots currently available, including ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot.

What does this mean for the user?

Making the memory feature free makes Claude significantly more attractive. Users can chat in context throughout, reference old data, and even create reports from their conversation history.

More importantly, the ability to import data from other chatbots reduces the barrier to switching platforms. For those who want to experiment with a new AI ecosystem without losing their entire previous work history, now is the right time to try Claude.

The competition among AI chatbots is shifting from who responds better to who retains users more effectively. And memory – literally – is becoming a strategic advantage.
