ASUS launches ROG Strix XG27JCG: The world's first 5K 180Hz gaming monitor.

ASUS has just launched the ROG Strix XG27JCG , the world's first gaming monitor to support 5K 180Hz mode . Not only does it boast an extremely high pixel density, but this monitor also comes with a correspondingly high price tag — enough to buy a good quality 4K OLED monitor.

The ROG Strix XG27JCG uses a high-end Fast IPS panel and is considered ASUS's latest flagship model. While high refresh rate 4K monitors are already quite common, pushing the resolution to 5K delivers a significantly higher pixel density. It might not sound like a huge difference, but 5K actually has 77% more pixels than 4K, resulting in noticeably sharper images. Therefore, ASUS's commercialization of a 180Hz 5K monitor is very impressive.

Of course, this product is aimed at tech enthusiasts, and the price will certainly be significantly higher than traditional 4K IPS monitors. According to the published specifications, the XG27JCG achieves a pixel density of 218 ppi on a 27-inch screen , coupled with a 180Hz refresh rate — more than enough for those who need a smooth experience. ASUS seems to have used a new generation of Fast IPS with a GtG response time of only 0.3 ms , much lower than the commonly seen 1 ms.

One notable feature is that the monitor supports two operating modes : 5K 180Hz or QHD 330Hz. Users can choose between ultra-high sharpness or super-smooth motion. However, pushing games to 180 FPS at 5K is a huge challenge for any GPU—even the RTX 5090—especially with today's AAA games becoming increasingly demanding. Therefore, the QHD 330Hz mode will probably be more suitable for most gamers.

ASUS also includes FreeSync Premium and G-Sync support to minimize screen tearing. The panel boasts a contrast ratio of 1500:1 , higher than the common level for IPS. Color reproduction is impressive with 97% DCI-P3 , Delta E < 2, and HDR support with a maximum brightness of 600 nits in HDR mode.

ASUS notes that to enable 5K 180Hz, users must own a compatible GPU. According to the company, only GeForce RTX 50 series and AMD Radeon RX 7600 or higher meet the requirements. Interestingly, even though the monitor only uses DisplayPort 1.4 — which doesn't have enough bandwidth for uncompressed 5K 180Hz — ASUS still claims older GPUs are completely 'incompatible,' which is quite puzzling.

In terms of connectivity, the XG27JCG has two HDMI 2.1 ports, one DisplayPort 1.4, and a USB-C port (supporting DP Alt Mode). The lack of a DisplayPort 2.1 is a significant drawback, especially for a high-end product priced at around $850 USD , as listed in Hong Kong. At this price point, users could easily opt for the MSI MAG 321CUP QD-OLED , a 4K 165Hz monitor with significantly superior image quality and contrast.
