A service that can consume CPU, RAM, and disk space will be enabled by default on Windows 11 25H2 and 24H2.

Recently, Microsoft announced a major performance improvement for Windows Server 2025 with a new native feature that speeds up storage and related tasks by up to 80%.

 

However, at the same time, the Redmond company also confirmed that it would enable a system service by default on Windows 11 – quite ironically, as this very service has been repeatedly criticized by users for causing performance issues due to its potential to consume significant CPU and memory resources.

Last week, Microsoft released the December 2025 Patch Tuesday updates with code KB5072033 for Windows 11 versions 25H2, 24H2, and Windows Server 2025. Recently, a group of Windows 11 users discovered that Microsoft had updated the release notes for this cumulative update to include changes related to a system process. Specifically, the company stated:

Update December 15, 2025: This feature has been included in the December 2025 non-security update (KB5072033).

[System Components] The AppX Deployment Service (Appxsvc) has been switched to Automatic startup mode to improve stability in certain specific scenarios.

A quick Google search for the Appxsvc service easily reveals numerous forum posts reflecting issues related to this process, from high CPU usage and excessive RAM consumption to negative impacts on disk performance. Therefore, Appxsvc is considered one of the system services that can potentially become a "resource hog" depending on how it affects different machine configurations.

 

Previously, Appxsvc's default startup mode was set to 'Manual (Triggered)', meaning the service was only activated when needed, such as when a user accessed or installed an application from the Microsoft Store. However, with the new change, Microsoft has switched this service to 'Automatic' mode, causing it to run in the background from the moment the system starts. This could be an unpleasant surprise for low-end or less powerful machines running newer versions of Windows 11.

Essentially, Appxsvc is a service responsible for managing Microsoft Store apps and their updates. Microsoft also warns that if users intentionally disable this service, Store apps may become unstable or stop working altogether.

If a reason for this decision had to be given, it's very likely Microsoft is preparing a plan to distribute Microsoft Store updates directly through Windows Update. In that case, the components related to the Store would need to be constantly enabled to ensure a seamless update process.
