Choose an AI assistant by the work you need it to do, the files and services it can access, and how easily you can verify its results. ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Poe, and Microsoft Copilot offer overlapping capabilities, but their integrations, account requirements, and usage allowances differ.
This is a practical comparison, not a ranking of the most-used services. The original article did not provide representative usage evidence for such a ranking.

1. ChatGPT
OpenAI's ChatGPT can help with writing, explanations, coding, and work involving files or other tools available to the account. The relevant distinction is the task and available feature set, rather than treating “ChatGPT Plus” as a separate chatbot.
Test it with a real example: provide a document and ask for a summary with references to the source, or request a code change plus a way to verify it. Check the output yourself. Paid access does not guarantee correctness.
2. Gemini
Google's Gemini is worth evaluating when your work involves Google's ecosystem and the integrations offered to your account. Available features depend on the plan, account type, region, and application.
Do not rely on the old “Gemini Advanced” label or a reseller's package description to infer current benefits. Check the current official Gemini plan information and test the exact app or integration you intend to use.
3. Claude
Anthropic's Claude supports tasks involving writing, analysis, coding, and documents. For a long document, evaluate whether it follows your instructions, preserves important qualifications, and makes its conclusions easy to trace to the supplied material.
A tendency to produce fluent or lengthy output is not a guarantee of depth or accuracy. Inspect source fidelity, calculations, and code behavior rather than judging the result by its length.
4. Poe
Poe provides access to a range of bots and models through one platform. It can be useful when you want to compare model behavior without using a separate interface for every provider.
Access to a model through Poe is not the same as owning a ChatGPT Plus or Claude subscription. Tools, context limits, usage costs, and provider-specific features can differ. Check the bot's identity and the current allowance before a lengthy session; the Poe FAQ explains the service.
5. Microsoft Copilot
Microsoft uses the Copilot name across several products. The consumer assistant, Microsoft 365 features, and GitHub Copilot are different experiences with different access conditions.
For help inside Word or Excel, verify the Microsoft 365 integration and license. For coding inside a development workflow, evaluate GitHub Copilot or another dedicated coding tool rather than assuming the consumer chat interface is the same product. Our comparison of AI tools for Word helps with document-focused choices.
Compare them with the same small test
| What matters | What to check |
|---|---|
| Answer quality | Correctness, useful detail, and willingness to state uncertainty |
| Document work | File support, source fidelity, export quality, and privacy |
| Coding | Project context, runnable changes, tests, and review controls |
| Integrations | The exact apps, permissions, and account types supported |
| Cost | Current price, usage limits, taxes, and cancellation terms |
Use non-sensitive examples and score the results against a known answer or explicit acceptance criteria. One carefully checked test is more useful than asking every assistant a vague question and comparing how confident it sounds.

Historical community poll from the original article; it is not a representative current market-share survey.
Do you need more than one subscription?
Start with one service that fits your most frequent task. Add another only when it solves a specific problem well enough to justify the extra cost and review work. Agreement between two chatbots does not independently verify a claim; both can repeat the same mistake.
Check claims against primary sources, test generated code, and review sensitive-data precautions before uploading work material. Compare current official plan details rather than old prices or third-party upgrade advertisements.
