This dogfight was part of DARPA's Air Combat Evolution (ACE) program.

DARPA began the ACE program with the X-62A, also known as the In-Flight Modulation Simulation Test Aircraft (VISTA), to create an automated control system with the same capabilities as human pilots.

The X-62A is a version based on Lockheed Martin's F-16D fighter. The aircraft is equipped with Block 40 avionics and many other modifications that enable AI integration. Tests show that it can fly for many hours without a pilot.

The goal of the ACE program is to be able to use machine learning as an alternative to humans. In particular, based on historical data and experience in the interactive system, AI can adjust behavior.

Air combat may not be like modern warfare, which is complex and unpredictable, but it's a good way to test AI. It requires AI to comply with regulations for pilot training.

Air combat exercises take place at an altitude of 600m and a speed of 1,900 km/h requiring strict safety regulations. Although AI is in charge of controlling the X-62A, there is always a pilot ensuring safety in the cockpit.

This year will continue aerial combat trials that will help fine-tune AI, establishing the ethical basis for using such a system.

If successful, ACE could lead to the birth of AI systems in charge of piloting and participating in combat, while pilots will take on the role of mission commander, overseeing the more important aspects of the job. .
