How to Earn and Use Stardust in Pokémon GO

Stardust is one of the main resources in Pokémon GO. You earn it through normal play and spend it to power up Pokémon, unlock second Charged Attacks, complete trades and purify Shadow Pokémon. Unlike Candy, Stardust is shared across all Pokémon species, so careless spending can quickly empty your supply.

The original version of this guide described Stardust as an evolution resource and recommended an old Gym-defense reward system. Those mechanics no longer apply. Pokémon generally evolve with species Candy and, in some cases, an additional item or requirement; Stardust is used for other upgrades and actions.

Reliable ways to earn Stardust

Catch Pokémon regularly

Catching wild Pokémon is the most consistent source of Stardust because it works during almost every play session. Some species or event bonuses award more than the usual amount, and weather-boosted catches can provide extra Stardust. Catch streak rewards also make daily play worthwhile.

If you want to collect Stardust efficiently, choose an area with frequent spawns, keep enough Poké Balls available and catch common Pokémon instead of ignoring them. A Star Piece can increase Stardust earned for a limited time, so save one for periods when you expect to claim several large rewards or catch many Pokémon.

Hatch Eggs

Hatching Eggs awards Stardust as well as Pokémon and Candy. The reward varies, so do not rely on a single fixed amount for every Egg distance. Keep an Egg in your free Incubator when possible, and consider timing several hatches together while a Star Piece is active.

Older screenshots may show Egg distances or reward screens that differ from the current interface, but the basic method remains the same: place an Egg in an Incubator and walk the required distance while Adventure Sync or the game records your movement.

Complete Research and limited-time activities

Field Research, Special Research and Timed Research may include Stardust rewards. Event tasks and Collection Challenges can also provide it. Reward amounts and availability change, so check the Today and Research views before an event ends.

When several completed tasks are ready to claim, activating a Star Piece first may increase the total Stardust received. Confirm that the reward actually includes Stardust before using the item.

Play GO Battle League and other battle content

GO Battle League awards Stardust through set rewards, rank progress and end-of-season rewards. Raids, Team GO Rocket battles and other activities may also contribute directly or indirectly, depending on the current reward structure. These methods are useful if they fit your normal play, but they should supplement catching rather than replace it.

Claim weekly and event bonuses

Adventure Sync walking rewards, daily bonuses and seasonal events can provide additional Stardust. Event multipliers are especially valuable because they improve the return from actions you already perform. Check the in-game event details instead of assuming that an older bonus is still active.

What no longer earns Stardust

The former Gym system awarded Stardust and PokéCoins for defending Gyms. The current Defender Bonus is based on PokéCoins, not a recurring Stardust payout after 20 hours. Leaving a Pokémon in a Gym can still be useful for coins, but it is not a Stardust-farming method.

When should you spend Stardust?

There is no universal Trainer level at which spending becomes correct. A better rule is to invest only when a Pokémon has a clear job and the upgrade will help now. Before powering up, check its species, moves, appraisal, intended battle league and the total Stardust and Candy cost.

Power up useful Pokémon

Powering up increases a Pokémon's CP and HP. Prioritize Pokémon you plan to use for raids, Gyms, Team GO Rocket battles or PvP. High CP alone does not prove that a Pokémon is worth the cost; typing, moves, level and the format's CP limit also matter.

Unlock a second Charged Attack

Many Pokémon can learn an additional Charged Attack in exchange for Stardust and Candy. This can improve coverage in PvP and make some raid attackers more flexible, but costs vary widely. Confirm that the Pokémon benefits from the extra move before paying.

Budget for trades and purification

Trading consumes Stardust, with the cost affected by factors such as friendship level and whether the trade is special. Purifying a Shadow Pokémon also uses Stardust and Candy. Keep a reserve if you are planning either action instead of spending your entire balance on power-ups.

A practical Stardust routine

• Catch Pokémon during everyday play, including common spawns.
• Keep the free Incubator working and claim Research before it expires.
• Save Star Pieces for stacked rewards, bonus events or concentrated catch sessions.
• Review upgrade costs before powering up or adding a Charged Attack.
• Maintain a reserve for trades, purification and future team changes.

Stardust is easiest to manage when earning and spending decisions support the same goal. Build it through regular catches and rewards, then invest in Pokémon that you are ready to use rather than upgrading only because their CP is high.
