Sony surpasses the 40 million PlayStation 5 mark worldwide sold
Accordingly, the Japanese technology giant has officially confirmed that it has sold more than 40 million PlayStation 5 consoles since the time this product line started hitting shelves in August 2020. Before that, the milestone of 30 million units were established in January 2023.
Thus, since the beginning of the year, there have been about 10 million PlayStation 5 units sold. In fact, this number has not surpassed last year's achievement, when Sony sold an average of 5 million PlayStation 5 units in a quarter. However, the fact that the supply chain is fully restored is a good sign for the Japanese company to hope for a sales boom in the shopping season from now until the end of the year.
The PlayStation 5 ships in two variants: a $399 Digital Edition and a $499 Standard Edition with an included drive. Sony revealed that there are more than 2,500 games currently available in the PlayStation 5 ecosystem, from both backwards compatibility and new releases. This is also an important factor contributing to the success of PS5.
Sony is also rumored to be working on a new "Slim" variant of the PlayStation 5 with a slimmer design, expected to cost $399. There are rumors about Sony discounting the current two versions to 'pave the way' for this new version.
In addition, Sony also plans to release a number of potential accessories for the PlayStation 5 system by the end of 2023, including the PlayStation VR2 and the Project Q streaming device.
