OpenAI reveals plans to launch a series of AI devices running ChatGPT: Smart speakers, glasses, wearables

OpenAI made headlines back in June when it acquired io, a tech startup founded by legendary Apple designer Sir Jony Ive. Since then, rumors of ChatGPT-enabled devices have been rife, but no official announcement has been made. Now, a reputable source has revealed that the AI giant is actually developing a whole line of AI hardware.

According to The Information, OpenAI has 'recruited' many senior hardware personnel from Apple, and cooperated with long-time supply chain partners of the bitten Apple. It seems that the company is nurturing a series of AI devices for the near future.

'One of the products OpenAI is discussing with suppliers is a design that resembles a screenless smart speaker. They are also considering smart glasses, a digital voice recorder, and a pin-shaped wearable device. The first batch of products is expected to be released in late 2026 or early 2027,' the report said .

The Wall Street Journal also reported that OpenAI is working on a 'new device that helps users escape screen-bound experiences,' but it's unclear what it will look like and whether it will be wearable.

Before announcing the multi-billion dollar deal, OpenAI and io had been secretly collaborating for several years, experimenting with ideas like 'headphones and camera-equipped devices.' The source said that OpenAI's first AI product will have several unique features:

'The device will be fully aware of the user's environment and life, operate discreetly, can be carried in a pocket or placed on a desk, and become a third core device alongside the MacBook Pro and iPhone.'

In fact, many companies have experimented with AI devices. The Humane AI Pin failed early, the Rabbit R1 has not made a splash, except for the Plaud Note, which has achieved considerable success. Therefore, the tech world is very curious whether OpenAI can create its own 'iPhone moment' to reshape this nascent segment.
