OpenAI releases Codex for Windows: The official AI programming tool is now available on the Microsoft Store.

Finally, Windows users have some good news related to artificial intelligence. And no, this time it's not Microsoft continuing to 'force' users to use Microsoft Copilot. Instead, it's a tool that developers might actually want to install.

Notably, OpenAI has officially released the OpenAI Codex application for Microsoft Windows. This is not simply a port from another platform, but a 'standard' Windows application, built from the ground up to serve developers.

The Codex application allows for the management of multiple projects within a single central interface. On Windows, it runs directly using PowerShell within a separate sandbox environment of the operating system. This means you no longer have to run software originally designed for macOS and then try to "force" it onto Windows. Instead, it's an application optimized for Windows from the start. Previously, Windows developers were almost certainly left out of the game, but that has now changed.

The features that made Codex popular on other platforms are now fully available on Windows. The Skills system allows users to explore and expand Codex's capabilities by connecting with other applications. The Automations feature helps Codex automatically handle tasks in the background, reducing the need for constant monitoring. Meanwhile, Work Trees allows multiple independent tasks within the same project to run simultaneously, increasing productivity.

The Windows version also includes some platform-specific features. For example, the skill library includes a WinUI skill for Windows application developers. If you are familiar with working with the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), you can also port both the coding agent and the integrated terminal to run in this environment.

How to download the Codex on Windows

If you've been waiting for ChatGPT's AI programming tool to appear on Windows, you don't need to wait any longer. Users can download the Codex application from the Microsoft Store or directly from the OpenAI website.

After installation, simply log in with your existing ChatGPT account or use your API key to start using it immediately. From there, the Codex can help you generate source code, fix bugs, and optimize code directly on your Windows machine.
