Is 4K Streaming quality really worse than 4K Blu-ray?
4K movies, TV shows and video games promise the best in media quality: stunning colors, sharp motion and more detail than almost anything else.
But 4K isn't always 4K. That said, there are differences between 4K Streaming and 4K Blu-ray, which means you won't always see what you think, and there are some key areas to pay attention to.
5 differences between 4K Blu-ray and 4K Streaming
There are several factors that differentiate 4K Blu-ray from 4K Streaming: Bitrate, color reproduction, sound quality, connectivity and resolution. These 5 differences may not seem obvious when watching movies on disc or streaming, but when compared, the differences become clear.
| 4K Blu-ray | 4K Streaming |
---|---|---|
Bit rate | 90 - 128Mbps | 8 - 16Mbps |
Color reproduction | Sharper | More dull |
Sound quality | High quality, lossless | Compressed, lossy |
Connect | No Internet connection required | Requires Internet connection |
Resolution | Always 2160p | 2160p tends to drop with weak connections |
Bit rate
"Bit rate" is a technical way to describe the data transfer rate of video. Your average 4K Blu-ray - also known as a 4K UHD disc - has bit rates somewhere between 90 and 130Mbps (and in some cases, even higher). For comparison, 4K Streaming averages around 8 to 16Mbps. That's more than a small difference and shows that 4K Blu-ray discs can transfer more data, which equates to better video quality.
Color reproduction
Thanks to its higher bitrate, 4K Blu-ray can deliver superior color reproduction and fidelity compared to 4K Streaming. When streaming, you may notice banding, washed out blacks, or washed out colors due to lower bitrates and compression. On the other hand, 4K Blu-ray can maintain deeper black levels, richer colors, and smoother gradations, delivering more accurate and vivid images.
Sound quality
The article mentioned bit rate above but only in relation to image quality. However, the bit rate makes a difference in sound quality between 4K Streaming and 4K Blu-ray. In general, streaming services apply audio compression, which can reduce dynamic range by capping very low and very high frequencies to balance the sound of movies and TV shows. This doesn't happen with physical discs, which usually give you the audio you expect to be delivered.
Connect
Everyone hates buffers. Streaming services are designed to show your selections as soon as possible, even if 4K quality isn't fully buffered. Furthermore, slow Internet speeds or WiFi interruptions will prevent your content from being broadcast. You won't find this with 4K Blu-ray, which will always play at the highest quality from start to finish, with or without an Internet connection.
Resolution
4K resolution is 4 times that of 1080p HD (while 8K is 4 times that of 4K). However, 2160p resolution looks quite different on streaming services compared to physical discs. When you factor in differences in bitrates, color reproduction, and Internet connectivity, there's a clear difference in how that 2160p resolution appears on 4K Blu-ray (right) versus 4K Streaming (left) in the photo below.
Is Blu-ray better than Streaming?
What about standard Blu-ray? How do these HD discs compare to 4K streams? First, resolution is significantly improved when watching 4K streaming content compared to 1080p content on Blu-ray. Conversely, bitrates are still better on physical media than on streaming video, even if the physical media is HD and the streaming video is UHD. 1080p Blu-ray has bit rates as high as 40Mbps. The photo above highlights this difference, with the disc on the right and streaming on the left.
Ultimately, the fact remains: 4K Blu-ray looks better than any 4K Streaming title you can find based on bitrate alone. But that becomes indisputable when you factor in color reproduction, sound quality, more reliable connectivity, and more consistent resolution. In terms of quality, physical media is always ahead of streaming. There's almost no way a streaming service can beat a physical disc when it comes to 4K.
