The 5 best streaming services for 4K content
Buying a 4K TV isn't everything if you don't know where to stream 4K content. But don't worry; These are the best UHD streaming platforms based on number of titles, price point, and streaming options.
1. Netflix
If you are looking to stream 4K movies, Netflix is one of the best options. With a wealth of 4K content and a platform familiar to most people, it's an easy way to enjoy UHD entertainment.
The amount and variety of 4K content available to each subscriber will vary by region, but it's reasonable to expect Netflix originals to be 4K capable. To determine what content is available in your current location, try searching for 4K in Netflix while using a 4K-capable device. Or, if you're curious about a specific content, look for the Ultra HD badge on that content's information page.
Please note that if you search for this information on a non-4K capable device, the content will still appear but you will not be notified that it is Ultra HD content.
It's important to note that only Netflix Premium subscribers have access to 4K content on Netflix. Netflix Premium currently costs $22.99/month, as opposed to a Standard subscription that only allows Full HD streaming for $15.49/month. You may need to see what content is available in your area before determining if Netflix Premium is worth it.
Unfortunately, users cannot download 4K content to watch offline. Netflix only allows downloads up to 1080p HD quality.
2. Disney+
With over 100 content available, Disney+ offers 4K content for the whole family. You can locate these content by scrolling to the Ultra HD section on the home screen. Additionally, subscribers can use the search bar to find more 4K content. If you're curious about the title's formatting options, select the Details tab on the title's information page.
For those choosing Disney+ as their UHD streaming platform, access fees are not a concern. All Disney+ plans include access to the service's UHD content, with the cheapest plan being $7.99/month.
Disney+ automatically displays the highest quality option compatible with the streaming device, allowing subscribers to switch seamlessly. However, it's important to note that the Disney+ Basic plan with ads is limited to 1080p on Xbox and doesn't offer 4K streaming.
3. Max
Max boasts a huge library of over 1,000 4K content, including fan favorite Game of Thrones. To locate a title in UHD format on the Max, users simply need to use the search bar or read through the title's details screen, where a 4K UHD badge will appear.
Max subscribers' ability to enjoy 4K content depends on their streaming device and subscription plan. While Max will automatically use the highest quality video possible for everyone, the devices used must be one of the following:
- Fire TV
- Apple 4K TV
- Cox Contour 2 with Contour Stream Player
- LG 4K Smart TV
- Apple Vision Pro
- AirPlay 2 compatible 4K TV
- Google Chromecast Ultra
- Google Chromecast with Google TV
- iPhones and iPads
- Roku
- Xfinity X1 and Flex
- Visio 4K Smart TV
- Samsung Tizen 4k TV
Max users will also need to subscribe to an unlimited ad-free plan to access UHD content. This plan costs $19.99/month.
4. Apple TV+
Apple TV+ has a fairly limited 4K entertainment catalog with around 120 content. Although the amount of content is less than other streaming services, Apple TV+ is capable of pairing 4K entertainment with Spatial Audio for an immersive experience.
Apple TV+ is only available at one subscription level, priced at $9.99/month. Therefore, all Apple TV+ subscribers can enjoy UHD content. You can enjoy these content using the Apple TV app on Apple devices, smart TVs, game consoles.
5. Hulu
Hulu offers subscribers a limited list of content available to stream in 4K Ultra HD quality. These are usually just Hulu Originals and can be identified by the 4K badge on the Hulu app.
In contrast to other streaming services, like Netflix, Hulu subscribers do not need to purchase a higher tier to get access to 4K content. Hulu partners with several other streaming services and even offers a Live TV package. For this reason, their plan prices vary widely, but subscribers can get access to 4K content for as low as $7.99/month with the ad-supported basic plan.
For compatible devices with Hulu 4K content, be sure to use the latest Hulu app on one of the following devices:
- Apple TV 5th generation or later
- Fire TV or stick
- Chromecast Ultra
- Xbox One model X or S
- Roku
- Vizio smart TV
- LG UHD TV 2017 or later
- Samsung UHD TV 2019 and above
