ChatGPT for Google Sheets is an official spreadsheet-native experience that runs in a sidebar. It can help build, update, explain, and clean spreadsheets using natural-language instructions.
Install ChatGPT for Google Sheets
- Open the official ChatGPT for Google Sheets setup guide and follow its link to Google Workspace Marketplace.
- Install ChatGPT from the Marketplace listing and review the requested permissions.
- Open a spreadsheet in Google Sheets.
- Choose Extensions, open ChatGPT, and sign in with a supported ChatGPT account.
In managed workspaces, an administrator may need to enable the add-on or approve access before it appears.
What you can ask ChatGPT to do
- Explain formulas and trace errors.
- Clean inconsistent labels, formatting, or duplicate values.
- Create trackers, budgets, plans, and scenario tables.
- Summarize trends across multiple sheets.
- Apply requested updates and list what changed.
Use it safely
State exactly which tabs or ranges may change and what must be preserved. For a large edit, ask for a plan first and duplicate the spreadsheet so you can restore the original.
Review formulas, calculations, citations, and changed cells before saving or sharing the result. Do not treat the output as financial, legal, or tax advice.
Check permissions and data handling
ChatGPT processes the prompt and relevant spreadsheet context to respond. Your Google and ChatGPT plan terms, workspace controls, and administrator settings still apply. Avoid using confidential or regulated data unless your organization has approved the workflow.
Avoid look-alike add-ons
Google Workspace Marketplace also contains third-party AI add-ons. Verify the publisher and privacy policy before installing one; a listing that contains “ChatGPT” in its name is not necessarily the official OpenAI add-on.
