How to Play Diep.io and Build a High-Scoring Tank

Learn Diep.io controls, level safely on shapes, spend stat points with a clear build, choose tank upgrades, and survive longer against other players.

Table of Contents

In Diep.io, you control a tank, destroy shapes and opponents for experience, and spend stat points to define a build. The safest route to a high score is to level on shapes early, choose upgrades that support one coherent play style, and avoid fights that do not offer a safe exit.

Play on the official Diep.io site. The game is also available on mobile; the old claim that it works only in a mobile browser is no longer accurate.

Basic controls

  • Move: W, A, S, and D or the arrow keys
  • Aim: Move the mouse pointer
  • Fire: Hold the left mouse button or Space
  • Auto-fire: Press E
  • Auto-spin: Press C on tanks where continuous rotation is useful

Controller and touch controls depend on the current platform. Learn the movement and firing controls in a quiet area before approaching another tank.

Level safely at the start

Squares, triangles, and pentagons provide experience without the same risk as attacking a player. Keep moving while shooting them so a faster tank cannot line up an easy hit. Watch the edges of the screen and leave room to retreat.

Do not chase a damaged opponent deep into unexplored space. A low-health player may be leading you toward teammates, traps, or a stronger build.

Understand stat points

The standard stats cover regeneration, maximum health, body damage, bullet speed, bullet penetration, bullet damage, reload, and movement speed. A good build does not need to maximize everything. It needs enough movement to disengage and enough offense to make its chosen weapon effective.

Beginner bullet build

  • Prioritize bullet damage and bullet penetration together.
  • Add reload so the tank can maintain pressure and destroy shapes faster.
  • Invest in movement speed before the map becomes crowded.
  • Add bullet speed if the chosen class relies on landing shots at range.
  • Use remaining points for health or regeneration based on how often you take chip damage.

This is a framework, not a fixed numerical formula. A Sniper path values bullet speed and careful distance; a Machine Gun path benefits from sustained fire; a body-damage tank needs a completely different allocation.

Choose a tank path

At level 15, the Basic Tank can branch into core paths such as Twin, Sniper, Machine Gun, or Flank Guard. Further upgrades normally appear at levels 30 and 45. Do not choose a class only because it appears on a tier list; choose one whose firing pattern matches the stats already purchased.

PathStrengthMain risk
TwinConsistent forward fire and straightforward aimCan be flanked without good movement
SniperRange and vision for deliberate shotsMisses leave long openings
Machine GunHigh volume of fire and pressureSpread makes distant accuracy less reliable
Flank GuardCoverage in more than one directionIndividual firing lanes may be weaker

Pick the right game mode

Free For All rewards independent survival, while team modes provide bases and allies. Other rotating or available modes can add walls, objectives, flags, or Dominators. Read the mode description before spawning; a build that works in open FFA may struggle in a tight maze or objective match.

Survival habits that raise scores

  • Keep the mouse near the direction you may need to fire, not directly on your tank.
  • Use recoil and movement together; many classes can accelerate or brake through their firing direction.
  • Avoid the center until the build can handle attacks from several directions.
  • Do not spend every point immediately if you are unsure which upgrade path you will take.
  • Use the leaderboard as threat information, not as a list of players to chase.
  • After taking damage, create distance before relying on regeneration.

A high score comes from time alive as much as aggressive kills. Farm efficiently, take favorable fights, and disengage before a second opponent turns a winning duel into an elimination.
