To score well in Slither.io, survive first and collect mass second. Your snake dies when its head touches another snake's body, regardless of size. Your own body is safe to cross, so careful turns and coils become important as you grow.
Play through the official Slither.io site or official mobile app. Enter a nickname, choose a skin if desired, and start in a quieter part of the arena.
Controls and basic rules
- Guide the snake with the mouse pointer on a computer or the on-screen control on mobile.
- Hold the boost control to move faster. Boosting consumes some of your mass and leaves pellets behind.
- Collect scattered pellets or the larger trail left when another snake crashes.
- Make an opponent's head touch your body to eliminate it.
- Never assume a larger snake has priority; any snake dies from a head-to-body collision.
Test the boost in open space. The increased speed also widens the turning line and makes an accidental collision more likely.
Early game: grow without gambling
At a small size, collect loose pellets and stay away from crowded remains. A fresh elimination attracts several snakes, and the smallest player has the least room to escape.
- Move in gentle curves rather than sharp, unpredictable turns.
- Keep empty space on one side as an exit route.
- Take the outer edge of a large food trail instead of diving through its center.
- Do not follow a bigger snake so closely that one turn traps you.
Use boosting efficiently
Boosting is most valuable for positioning, not ordinary travel. Use a short burst to move your body across an opponent's path, escape a closing gap, or reach a safe portion of a food trail. Release the boost as soon as the advantage is secured.
Long, aimless boosts reduce the mass you worked to collect. They also make your movement easier to predict.
Force opponents into your body
A common elimination move is to travel alongside another snake, accelerate slightly ahead, then curve across its path. Leave enough distance that you do not expose your own head during the turn. If the opponent has more open space than you do, disengage instead of forcing the attempt.
Head-on approaches are dangerous because a small movement can decide which snake collides first. Create an angle rather than racing directly at the other player.
Circle a smaller snake
A long snake can surround a much smaller one by forming a complete loop, then gradually tightening it. This is effective but takes time and attracts other players.
- Make sure the target is sufficiently smaller and isolated.
- Complete the circle without leaving a gap near your head.
- Keep the head close to your own body for protection.
- Tighten slowly; sudden changes can create an opening or cause a collision outside the loop.
- After the target crashes, collect cautiously and watch for snakes outside your coil.
Collect mass from a fallen snake safely
The brightest food trail is also the most dangerous place on the map. Approach parallel to the trail rather than cutting across multiple moving snakes. Take a section, then leave before the gap closes.
- Expect nearby players to boost toward the same mass.
- Protect your head by keeping it near your own body.
- Do not turn back sharply into traffic.
- Abandon the food if two larger snakes are closing from opposite sides.
Late game: protect the score
As your snake becomes long, movement takes more planning. Avoid tight crowds where the tail blocks possible exits. Large coils can create a protected space, but staying in one loop indefinitely limits growth and allows other snakes to surround the outside.
Watch the minimap for general position and player density, then keep your attention on the area around the head. A high score usually ends through one unnecessary risk, so make opponents enter your path instead of chasing every possible elimination.
