Update the firmware for your Kindle reader

Since updating to firmware 5.9.6, Amazon has allowed users of their devices to install custom fonts, starting with Kindle Paperwhite (2014). You should run a version new enough to install custom fonts.

To check your Kindle firmware, press the Menu button (3 dots) and select Settings.

Then press the Menu button again. If the Update Your Kindle option is not grayed out, tap it. Your Kindle will update, reboot and then run the latest firmware version.

Install custom fonts on Kindle reader

After you've made sure the firmware has been updated, it's time to install custom fonts on your Kindle. First of all, note that the device only supports fonts OpenType (OTF) or TrueType (TTF).

Second, you will need to find some of the fonts you want to install on your reading machine. You can choose a font from the Fonts folder of your computer or download it from a third party website. There are several places you can download free fonts online. Here is a list of some sites you can check out:

  1. Font Squirrel
  2. 1001 Free Fonts
  3. dafont.com
  4. Font Space
  5. Fontstock.net

Save the font file you want on the computer. Then connect the Kindle to the computer via a USB cable. You will then be able to browse the memory in your Kindle like any connected external hard drive.

Find the Fonts folder , copy and paste the font file you downloaded there. Then disconnect Kindle from the computer.

Check out new fonts on Kindle

Now it's time to see if the font you choose fits on Kindle. Open a book and press Page Display> Font & Page Settings .

New fonts will be available right next to the Custom tab .

Also, note that in this section, you can change your font and adjust other font settings like size and thickness.
