How to disable Pocket in Firefox on desktop and mobile phones

Pocket, formerly known as "Read It Later", is a free service and application that allows users to save content for later viewing. Pocket is integrated in Firefox browser and has a small button next to the address bar. Pocket allows you to save articles, websites or videos in the desktop browser and open them on your phone using the Pocket app even while offline.

Pocket is a convenient tool, but not everyone likes this built-in feature. In fact, some users complained when Mozilla first added Pocket to Firefox 38 in 2015. The reason for protesting is that Mozilla has integrated an unnecessary open source tool into another open source web browser. Before Firefox 38, Pocket was available as a third-party add-on. So if you don't like it, you can completely delete it from the browser. Because the current feature is integrated into the web browser, you can disable it but cannot delete it completely from Firefox.

In November 2017, Mozilla enhanced the Pocket by introducing the " Recommended by Pocket " feature as part of the new Firefox Quantum experience. When opening a new tab, Pocket proposes a list of articles based on the most popular items saved on that day. Recommended by Pocket works independently with Save to Pocket feature , so disabling a feature will not disable the remaining feature.

To turn off this Pocket feature, you need to access advanced settings of Firefox.

Step 1. Type about: config in the address bar and press Enter . You will see a warning from Mozilla saying that if you arbitrarily change the about: config settings, it can cause Firefox stability, security, and performance issues. If accepting risks, click " I accept the risk! " To continue.

Note, disabling Pocket in about: config settings page does not delete " Recommended by Pocket " from the New Tab page.

Fortunately, Mozilla only adds Recommended by Pocket feature to mobile web browser, so you don't need to do much to disable it.

Step 1. If you're using an iPhone or iPad, click the menu to open it and select Settings .

Step 2 . Touch New Tab and off Recommended by Pocket .

If you're using an Android device, open the menu and click Settings . Go to " General -> Home -> Top Sites " and turn off Recommended by Pocket feature .

Although Mozilla will not intend to remove Pocket from Firefox in the future, they will provide a way to make this feature better. If you want to use the old Pocket ad-on, you can find some unofficial versions like In My Pocket in Firefox's extesion library.

If you don't want to see this Pocket button on the address, you can hide it without making changes in about: config. Just right-click the Save to Pocket icon and select " Remove from Address Bar ." This will not disable the Pocket feature, and you'll still see it in the Page Actions menu, but at least it won't appear next to the address bar.
