Google Translate launches real-time AI translation feature and foreign language learning tools

Google has just updated its Translate app to support real-time translation. The new feature, called Live Translation , uses AI to support two-way conversations with both audio and translation displayed on the screen.

Google Translate already has a Conversations feature that allows for bilingual conversations with people who speak other languages. Now, Live Translation takes it a step further by applying Google's latest AI model, providing a more natural conversation experience, supporting more than 70 languages.

According to Google, Live Translation can recognize pauses in conversations, the speaker's tone and intonation. It also separates audio effectively in noisy environments like airports and cafes. Live Translation is now rolling out to Android and iOS users in the US, India and Mexico.

Additionally, Google Translate is also launching a new language learning feature, currently in beta on Android and iOS. Users can practice listening and speaking skills in personalized practice sessions, depending on their level and learning goals.

This tool currently supports English speakers learning Spanish and French. Conversely, Spanish, French, and Portuguese speakers can use it to learn English. In the Translate app, you'll see a Practice option at the bottom of the screen to get started.

Learners can choose from suggested scenarios or create their own practice situations. The app also tracks daily progress and awards 'stars' when you complete activities.

Google says it translates more than 1 trillion words a day using Translate across Google Search, Lens, and Circle to Search. It's also harnessing the power of AI to study ancient languages and help preserve indigenous languages at risk of extinction.
