Comparing AirTag 2 and AirTag 1: What upgrades has Apple made after 4 years?

Apple's latest tracking device, the AirTag 2, is now available for purchase in the US and select markets at the same price of $29. This is an upgrade released more than four years after Apple introduced the first-generation AirTag in 2021.

In its official announcement, Apple stated that AirTag 2 brings several important improvements, although most are 'under the surface'. First, the device is equipped with new Bluetooth and UWB (Ultra Wideband) chips, which increase the operating range and improve the accuracy of the Precision Finding feature.

Notably, Precision Finding on AirTag 2 now supports compatible Apple Watch models, including Apple Watch Series 9 (or later) and Apple Watch Ultra 2 (or later).

Another feature that makes AirTag 2 easier to find is its new, louder built-in speaker. While the specifications don't clearly show this difference, a short video shared on social media shows that the AirTag 2's notification sound has a higher frequency and is significantly louder than its predecessor.

Overall, the two generations of AirTag are almost identical in appearance and feel. However, upon closer inspection in real life, certain differences can still be observed.

The retail packaging for AirTag 2 has been refined.

The difference between AirTag 2 and AirTag 1 is immediately noticeable in the packaging. Previously, the first-generation set of four AirTags came in a rectangular box, with the AirTags arranged in layers inside, opening like a book. In contrast, AirTag 2 comes in a taller box, with the devices neatly arranged in a row.

Apple also updated the lettering on the AirTag 2 box, creating a raised and glossy effect instead of the flat lettering of the previous generation. The inner packaging opening mechanism has also been redesigned, and the protective plastic layer of the AirTag 2 looks more matte, giving it a more paper-like feel than before.

Most of the upgrades are internal.

When disassembling the AirTag 2, it's clear that Apple spent a significant amount of time redesigning the internal components. Upon removing the battery, users will find a QR code along with the letter 'R' printed on the plastic casing.

According to the teardown tester, the AirTag 2's PCB is noticeably thinner than the AirTag 1's. However, Apple's official specifications show that the AirTag 2 is slightly heavier than its predecessor.

Among the notable changes, Apple has installed new speakers that are about 50% louder on the AirTag 2, added more test points on the circuit board, and changed the angle of the battery connectors. Additionally, Apple appears to have implemented an anti-tampering measure by securing the speaker magnets more firmly with adhesive, and the speaker coil on the new AirTag is also slightly larger than before.

One of AirTag's biggest strengths since its launch is its button-operated battery replacement in just seconds. This is perhaps the least "Apple-esque" detail, but it makes perfect sense for a tracking device that needs to operate continuously and minimize downtime.

Overall, initial impressions suggest that AirTag 2 is a gradual, refined upgrade. It's reminiscent of the earlier 'S' iPhone models, where Apple focused on upgrading the internal hardware while maintaining the overall design between generations.

Apple is currently building a small ecosystem around AirTag, based on its massive Find My network, and the ability to share AirTag's location with friends or airlines to track lost luggage.

Although Apple has made virtually no changes to the external design, many people still hope the company will at least offer new color options. But perhaps Apple still wants users to buy the FineWoven Key Ring accessory in various colors, even though the price of this accessory is even higher than an AirTag.
