AutoCAD 2018 System Requirements and Compatibility Notes

AutoCAD 2018 is a legacy release. Its original system requirements are useful when maintaining an existing licensed workstation, but they do not mean that AutoCAD 2018 is supported on a current Windows or macOS computer. Install it only for a documented compatibility need, from an Autodesk-provided or organization-approved installer, and test it offline from production drawings first.

AutoCAD 2018 for Windows: original requirements

AutoCAD for Mac 2018 compatibility information — AutoCAD for Mac 2018 was designed for Intel Macs and legacy macOS releases.

Autodesk maintains the archived AutoCAD for Mac 2018 requirements. Do not use this table to assume compatibility with a current Mac.

Should you install AutoCAD 2018 today?

Prefer a supported current AutoCAD release unless all of the following are true:

A client, plug-in, custom application or validation process specifically requires 2018.
Your organization has a valid entitlement to run that previous version.
The operating system and hardware have been tested with the complete workflow.
Required updates, object enablers, fonts and plug-ins are available from approved sources.
IT accepts the security and support limitations.
A migration plan exists for drawings and customizations.

DWG 2018 is a file format family used by later AutoCAD releases as well, so a drawing saved in the 2018 format does not automatically require the AutoCAD 2018 application. Test the file in a supported release or free viewer before maintaining an old workstation solely because of the filename or DWG version.

Licensed access to an older Autodesk release

Autodesk's previous-version download policy normally exposes the current release and a limited number of earlier versions to eligible subscriptions. Versions four or five years back may require Autodesk Assistant and an active eligible plan; older releases can fall outside that route. AutoCAD 2018 is therefore not a general free download.

Sign in to Autodesk Account with the account assigned the license.
Open All Products and Services and check the available AutoCAD versions.
Ask Autodesk Assistant or the organization's license administrator whether 2018 is available to the entitlement.
Download only the installer, language and platform Autodesk or the administrator provides.
Keep proof of entitlement and the installer checksum or source record.

Do not use a cracked installer, product-key list or third-party ISO. A legacy application's difficulty activating on modern infrastructure does not authorize bypassing the license.

Before installation

Create a full system backup and a separate backup of drawings, templates and custom files.
Inventory CUI/CUIX customizations, plot styles, SHX fonts, scripts, LISP routines and plug-ins.
Confirm the exact 2018 update level required by the operating system.
Close Autodesk applications and use a local installer with adequate free space.
Plan whether AutoCAD 2018 will coexist with another release; test file associations.
Use a non-production workstation or virtualized test environment when organizational policy permits it.

After installation

Apply all approved AutoCAD 2018 updates still available from Autodesk.
Open copies of representative drawings, including external references and custom objects.
Check plotting, PDF output, fonts, dimensions, layouts and object enablers.
Run the required plug-ins and automation with test data.
Save to a new file, close it and reopen it in both the legacy and intended current workflow.
Document any unsupported or disabled cloud services.

Common compatibility problems

Setup refuses to run

The current operating system may be outside the certified range, or the installer may depend on obsolete components. Do not disable core security protections broadly. Use Autodesk's legacy installation guidance, an approved older workstation, or migrate to a supported AutoCAD release.

Activation fails

Verify the Autodesk account, entitlement and product version with Autodesk or the license administrator. Autodesk's lifecycle and activation policies change over time; do not attempt offline cracks or patched license services.

The interface is tiny or blurry

Legacy high-DPI behavior can be inconsistent. Test supported display scaling and graphics settings without applying untrusted compatibility tools. A current release is the more dependable solution for a modern high-resolution workstation.

Online rendering or other services are missing

Some cloud-connected features from 2018 have been retired or changed. Autodesk notes that AutoCAD-based products from 2018 and earlier can no longer access certain Render Online functions directly through the ribbon. Use a supported rendering workflow instead of troubleshooting a retired service.

Alternatives when 2018 cannot be installed

Open and convert the DWG in a supported current AutoCAD release.
Use Autodesk DWG TrueView for viewing and compatible-version conversion on supported Windows systems.
Ask the file owner to export a compatible DWG, DXF or PDF.
Evaluate another CAD product only after testing layers, fonts, blocks, references and layouts.
