Apple improves Face ID on iOS 15 to not be fooled by 3D masks
Apple says iOS 15 has improved the quality and anti-spoofing capabilities of Face ID.
The first official version of iOS 15 was released on time at dawn on September 21 (September 20 in US time). Besides a bunch of new features, iOS 15 also has a number of security updates and upgrades.
The biggest improvement concerns Face ID facial recognition technology.
According to Apple, iOS 15 brings a fix and upgrade to Face ID technology. It will be made available to all devices with TrueDepth sensors: All iPhone models with Face ID from iPhone X to iPhone 13 and 3rd generation iPad pro.
Apple revealed that in the past bad guys could build 3D models just like a registered user of Face ID. This way, they can bypass Apple's sophisticated authentication system. To solve this problem, on iOS 15 Apple has improved Face ID's anti-spoofing models.
When Face ID was released, many individuals and organizations sought to bypass this system. In some cases of 3D models, 3D masks have surpassed Face ID. In addition, twins with identical faces can also unlock each other's Face ID easily.
Besides upgrading Face ID, iOS 15 also fixes issues related to Neural Engine, CoreML, Siri, Kernel, Preferences, WebKit.
