Apple CarPlay will soon support streaming video from iPhone to car screen

In an official developer post, Apple announced that CarPlay users will be able to view videos from their iPhone on their car's display. This feature will be supported by Apple AirPlay, allowing users to wirelessly mirror videos from their iPhone to their car's infotainment screen.

For safety reasons, users can only enjoy videos on the car screen when the vehicle is parked. They will not be able to watch videos when the vehicle is moving. The connected iPhone will automatically detect when the vehicle is moving and stop playing videos to avoid distracting the driver.

According to Apple, developers will need to 'integrate CarPlay support with AirPlay video to enable this feature in your car.' Carmakers will also need to add this support for users to be able to watch videos in their cars, so it may take some time for the feature to be widely deployed.

AirPlay video in the car lets people watch their favorite videos from their iPhone right on the CarPlay screen when they're not driving. Integrate CarPlay support with AirPlay video to enable this feature in your car.

Apple hasn't made it clear whether this feature will be exclusive to CarPlay Ultra (the newly released, limited premium version) or whether it will also benefit standard CarPlay users. It's also unclear whether existing cars will get support via a software update or if it will only be available on new models.

On the Android side, Google also announced a bunch of new features coming to Android Auto. The company expanded support for the weather app (which is in beta) and confirmed that Android Auto will soon support video apps and browsers.
