If the speaker still works
There is no reason to throw away a utility that is still active. As long as the speakers can still produce quality sound, you should continue to use them.
1. Turn the old desktop speaker into a large charging device
Not just you. None of us have any idea about reusing old desktop speakers. Until you know can turn old computer speakers into a portable charging device, that could be the perfect DIY project for beginners.
This project is very simple and does not require welding anything. All you need is a screwdriver, a small knife or a scissors, and some electrical tape. The first step is to open and disassemble the speaker. This step is very easy to do, because you will only have to remove the transformer, amplifier and drivers. Put the ingredients in a large plastic box and cut a few holes to place the wire, as shown.
You will need to create some small holes on the lid of the box. The phone will be placed at the top and you are ready to charge it!
2. Create a radio on the Internet
Remember the beautiful days of the past, when you tune the radio to listen to your favorite songs! What's more amazing when the radio automatically plays songs like what you experienced during the day. No need to create a playlist, not the next song. Take turns from one lesson to another.
You will need a pair of desktop speakers (still active) and a Raspberry Pi. And if you are skilled or know a little about carpentry, you can create the system like the above illustration.
There are several ways to set up a radio on the Internet. You can search on Google for more details.
3. Turn automobile speakers into a Boombox
(Boombox or "Jambox" is a portable transistor player with one or two cassette recorders / music players and AM / FM stations, often with handles).
Unless you are an audio enthusiast, the best speakers you have are right in your car. Car manufacturers use good hardware for speakers, especially drivers. You may want to take the speaker out before you sell a used car.
This is one of the 'ambitious' projects, so it's not simple, you'll need to do a lot of work with it. Car speakers require a power adapter, so learn how to create such a converter.
You will also need to add the amplifier to the system if not already available. Finally, car speakers are not always available right away, so you may have to spend another investment (in terms of time or money).
Perhaps it is easier to buy a new set of speakers. But meticulousness with old items will definitely bring you more fun, right?
4. Add Chromecast
For 'lazy' people who don't want to get their hands on any DIY ideas, the simplest option to reuse old speakers is to add Chromecast. Chromecast Audio dongle helps turn all speakers into wireless, so you can use your phone to play songs from them.
It's simple, easy but extremely effective. But it is not like Bluetooth sound. You still need to know the applications Chromecast Audio can work with. So if that sounds complicated, you can even add Bluetooth dongle replacement to Chromecast Audio dongle.
If the speaker does not work anymore
Now suppose your speakers are not working anymore. This is when you can comfortably take apart and do some nice things with them!
You should search the Internet about how to safely remove old speakers, corresponding to the model you have. The neat removal also gives you good materials that can be reused as large magnets on the drivers. They are even better than the magnets you get from disassembling the old hard drive.
5. Reuse the diaphragm part to make earrings hanging
The diaphragm part with thin rolled alloy has small holes, which are very suitable for making earrings. First, remove them from the speaker. If you cut them out, be careful and don't leave any jagged edges. Then hang them on the wall or throw them in the drawer. Remember that these diaphragms are made of metal, so you can spray them with your favorite color.
6. Make bookshelves or wooden decorations
Wooden boxes of old speakers are the most reused parts. You can turn them into almost anything you want, from bookshelves to tables.
For starters, starting a bookshelf will be a great starting point. Remove all parts inside the cabinet, sharpen it, then polish it up. You will have a lovely new furniture. If you have a set of two speakers, you may want to consider turning them into a bedside cabinet or even a wardrobe.
If you've had some experience with carpentry, try turning a set of speakers into a table. But note, beginners should not try to do this because it is quite complicated.
7. The cabinet contains the best tapes, discs and books in the world
This project requires a number of complex manipulations involving carpentry. So disassembling the speaker is the easiest part. You will not reuse any disassembled parts, so you can still use magnets or diaphragms for other purposes.
What did you do with the old speakers after you bought a new one? Have you thrown them to the landfill, reused them for some other utility, or tried to turn them into a creative DIY project?
