The navigation light is patented for the first time in 1938, and is almost immediately applied by most car manufacturers around the world. By 2013, vehicles on the road in most countries were required to have turn signals.

According to Vietnamese regulations, motorcycle turn signals, motorbikes must have amber or red light.

In 2008, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) published research results showing that vehicles equipped with amber color turn signals reduce the number of collisions by up to 28%. In 2009, NHTSA identified an amber turn signal light that provided a significant overall benefit when compared to a red turn signal.
