Uruguay, the first country to order a laptop for 100 USD

One Laptop Per Children (OLPC) project initiated by Professor Nicholas Negroponte in 2005 went into production and Uruguay was the first country to order 100,000 units.

The government of this South American country will distribute Laptops to children aged 6-12 years. It is expected that by 2009 Uruguay will order up to 300,000 units to be sufficient for distribution to children nationwide.

OLPC project computers are now called XO Laptops. This computer is designed to be durable, waterproof, solar powered, and can be charged or a hand tool to generate electricity. OLPC initially plans to sell Laptops for $ 100. But, after recalculating, there was a change in price. Last year it was estimated that the selling price would be 188 USD.

The original colors are only two colors, green and white. There are many other designs for choice. The first countries to contact OLPC are Cambodia, Afghanistan, Rwanda, Haiti. OLPC's recent report said it also contacted Libya, Pere and intended that Italy would support the program to donate 50,000 computers to Ethiopian children. However, all is only intended. And Uruguay is the first country to have an order.
