Ubuntu 25.10 'Questing Quokka' Development Begins, Release Roadmap Already in Place

Canonical has officially started development of Ubuntu 25.10 'Questing Quokka' – the successor to Ubuntu 25.04 'Plucky Puffin' (released on April 17). This update is scheduled to be released on October 9, 2025.

Similar to previous versions, Ubuntu 25.04 also follows the naming convention of adjective + noun, 'Questing Quokka' is a combination of 'Questing' (the arduous journey of searching) and 'Quokka' - a small, herbivorous, cat-sized marsupial in Australia that sleeps during the day. Canonical chose this name for the new Ubuntu version to raise awareness of the species, which is considered vulnerable according to the IUCN Red List.

Here are the notable milestones in the release roadmap of Ubuntu 25.10 "Questing Quokka":

  1. 8/14/2025: Feature Freeze Phase – freezing new features.
  2. 4/9/2025: UI Freeze – complete user interface.
  3. 9/18/2025: Release Beta for community experience.
  4. 10/9/2025: Official global launch.

As a non-LTS version, Ubuntu 25.10 will only receive security and software updates for nine months. Interested users can download Ubuntu Daily Builds for early testing, but be warned: these builds are often buggy and may not reflect the final features.

The question is should I upgrade to Ubuntu 25.10?

Ubuntu 24.04 LTS users: Not necessary, as LTS is supported until 2029.
Users of near-term releases (like Ubuntu 25.04 or 24.10): Upgrade to get access to new features and optimal security.
In addition to technical upgrades, Ubuntu 25.10 is also a reminder of the responsibility to protect wildlife. Will this release bring a breath of fresh air to the open source world? Let's wait and see!
